Drill Press Stand

Build this deluxe drill press table to simplify clamping woodworking projects and holding them steady while drilling. There are three types of drill bits commonly available to woodworkers: twist bits, used to drill both wood and metal; spade bits, used when rough splintered holes are acceptable; and power auger bits, which drill slower and leave a smoother hole than either twist or spade bits ( Figure 7-3 ). There are also specialty bits: brad-point, Forstner, multispur, screw drills, and plastic-drilling.

All of this is tied together with a simple calibration procedure that figures out where you’ve got the board using two reference drill locations; you initially jog the platform to two reference drill holes, and you’re set. The drill press is also economical and most individuals will have access to a drill press.

So when you find a high class drill press, it will not only drill into metal , but also cut into wood and undertake other woodworking operations. The work tables on most drill presses are designed for working with metal which is usually clamped in a drill press vice. It’s important to have a brief discussion about the drill press table, as this is important for the overall performance of your drill press. The table should be ground flat for accurate work, and the base should also have a flat surface for holding large work pieces. Unlike a drill press, which provides depth settings, a hand drill requires the user to follow the necessary depth by ulterior methods.

A proper drill press can work in your home shop more efficient and easier than ever. If you are not using a variable-speed drill, vary the speed by feathering the drill — intermittently squeezing the trigger and releasing it. Ease up on the pressure as you reach the bottom of the hole, but let the bit continue spinning as you remove it from the hole. It should be noted that you should not use a backing pad that is larger than 5 inches on any standard drill press.

Study the various features and accessories that are available to you, but also ask yourself some key questions about how much you’re willing to spend, what size you are looking for, and how you intend to use your drill press. The fence is locked in approximate position and the table is adjusted so drilling will occur on the centerline of the workpiece.
