Build Your Own Inexpensive Closet Doors!

I’m very picky when it comes to closet doors, I don’t really like any of the options out there. As far as quality goes, you dont go onto to speak of the higher quality of material, and different colour options which are provided by reputable closet companies compared to home improvement stores, or the skilled installation which goes along with it. Proper companies have knowledge to determine the wall structure, appropriate hardware to support the closet depending on the wall type.

I’m sort of obsessed with organization, (and would commute many miles to work at The Container Store just for the employee discount if there were one in our state), so the fact that all our towels have been piled on the floor in the hallway since we moved in 3 years ago is a serious problem, and the sheets/blankets have been stuffed into the guest bedroom closet… well to have all that wasted space in the bedroom closet started making us feel like there’s an obvious solution.

With the prices clearly visible as you build, you can really customize a closet design that fits within your budget. As soon as you are building it yourself, you may fit the sizes of your future stuff into the space of the room it will be placed in. Never hesitate to ask for an advice. The space, about 71/2 feet deep by 51/2 feet wide, was originally used as a linen closet. It is much easier to nail the framing members together on the floor if the room has a large, clear area to accommodate this. Simple custom-made shelving for shoes can be made out of painted MDF that any handyman or proficient DIY-lover could build themselves.

We have a hall closet near our front door that is filled with stuff that can live somewhere else. This will be the height of your clothing rod as well as the back support for the shelf on top of the rod. Whether you wear those sexy cut-off Daisy Dukes or you just have capris or regular shorts that you need to organize, you can easily store them in the closet.

Figure out if the reservoir can sit on the floor, or if you will route water in from a reservoir out of an exterior room. Here is a crafty closet organization tutorial that will benefit you on many different levels, without you having to invest in high-end materials or tools! The predrilled holes in the panels will allow you to easily move or add shelves and accessories to customize the closet now and in the future. So, build the wall about 1/4 inch shorter than the height of the ceiling, and then place shims or thin blocks between the top plate and the ceiling. If you can’t afford them now, install adjustable or slide-out shelves and add the drawers later.

After you’ve organized your clothing, lay the hanging and stacking items on the floor similar to the way you want them in your closet. Plug in your closet measurements and storage requirements and get storage design plans broken down into individual parts lists, which you can take along to the store or use to buy items online. Reach In closets can sometimes present a challenge when trying to optimize your closet storage. Eating in there will leave crumbs, and the stored food will attract bugs and make your hideout unhygienic. Forget the bathroom, it turns out shower hooks are perfect for hanging purses in your closet.

Unless you’re gung ho for a full-scale apartment remodel, your best bet is to wall off part of the room to create a faux walk-in closet. Instead of wasting wall space on belts and scarves (when you could be using it for prettier things like jewelry or a mirror), you can pull this organizer out when you need it and stash it out of sight when you don’t. We used the Kreg Jig to fasten these shelves in place, and also added 2x2s as supports (good ole warped plywood really needed the extra bracing). Knowing how EXPENSIVE custom closet shelving is, we decided to tackle it ourselves.

She is also a contributing writer at and Lori reviews products on her blog for her readers and recently designed, installed and reviewed a walk in closet from Closet Organizers USA. The miter angle cut on the bottom of the side panel is there because of two reasons, one is to avoid straight corner at body level so that we don’t run into it, and two is for static, I think it looks better and the closet will look bigger that way. We did a similar project in our living room by adding a wall to create an office/guest room that’s not much bigger than a walk-in closet, and the quotes came in at $2,000 and $4,700. The top rod is typically placed near 80 inches and the bottom rod around 40 inches above the floor.

If the closet has a side wall return, lay out the top plate and sole plate in the same way; use a framing square to make sure this will be perfectly perpendicular to the front wall. The ClosetMaid organizer comes with adjustable closet rods which are convenient but because there are two pieces the rod is not smooth and hangers get hung up in the center. The drawers and storage boxes feature hand-stitched leather pulls, and the shelves are crafted from quality maple wood.

We’ve tackled the laundry room problem, the play table problem, the media center problem, the big girl room problem, and now the where to put our laundry problem (which has also solved our no entry closet and no linen closet problems because we’ve freed up space in our old closet) so next up is the kitchen/dining room problem. Now I always feel like I have something awesome to throw on, be it Sunday brunch or a client meeting, because every single item hanging in my closet is something I would love to wear right this moment. No other closet organizer company offers this level of quality, convenience and value!

The middle shelf is really not necessary, but the top and bottom shelves are – as we will be adding a footer in the next step and there is a TON of valueable storage space on the top 🙂 Cut these to length. Instead of filling your closet with mismatched hangers (what an eyesore!), use spray paint to give your existing organizers a fresh coat of color (we spotted this trick on Hometalk ). It’ll make your closet more bright, fun, and organized. If you prefer to cut the shelves yourself, use a sharp 140-tooth plywood circular saw blade for the cleanest cuts.

Save hundreds or even thousands over our competitors by installing your closet organizers yourself. You have the choice between a 1mm and 3mm edging strip that can be fitted onto doors. To avoid marring closet sidewalls, cut full-length shelves at least 1/2 in. shorter than the length of the closet. This merger allows us to offer our customers access to high end custom closet organizers and closet accessories at fantastic prices.
