Kdat Plywood Detailed Plans Master Carpenter

ProWood® Kiln Dried (KDAT) has all the weather-beating durability you demand from treated wood, yet it’s dried in a kiln, which dramatically reduces shrinking and warping. Pine is a common wood of choice for decks as well as many other applications, with some claims being that 80 percent of decks are still made with it. It is considered environmentally friendly because of its abundance and fast-growing nature, and it is also economical for the same reasons. If you can’t find decently treated support posts, make your own by sandwiching three well-treated 2x4s or 2x6s together. Pressure-treated wood may be used inside, and is commonly used for the sill plates of homes and FRTW; fire-retardant treatments like D-Blaze offer additional protection from fire and smoke development.

Wood treated to ground contact levels is required for direct contact with the ground (e.g. fence posts, etc.), and in cases where a high-decay hazard is very likely to occur (e.g. soil/leaves/debris build-up or accumulations are left to remain in contact with the wood, poor ventilation, tropical climates, etc.). With water repellent treated wood, an initial coating of topical water repellent is not necessary.

A few weeks of hot days with no rain and a little breeze for good measure should be good for decking. I always try to use Zinsser Ext Oil Primer Sealer as it locks into the wood better than latex. I would recommend that you find a better source of wood that is dried properly. Kiln drying after treatment (KDAT), will add cost to the process and the finished products, however KDAT wood tends to reduce warping, as it is a more controlled drying method. Research conducted by the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI clearly shows that even a 3-week exposure to sun and rain is too much for new wood.

With a limited lifetime warranty and a prefinished water repellant sealant, MasterDeck materials are the ultimate in yellow pine pressure treated materials. It is unknown how long KDAT pressure treated wood might stay looking good before needing any coat of finish. While pine is a great wood when it comes to costs and benefits, and it is by no means considered undesirable or impractical, there are still some reasons it may not be the ideal choice for a particular project. The moisture content of the wood is already in balance with atmospheric moisture levels, so coating can proceed immediately.

The four principal species – loblolly, shortleaf, longleaf and slash – make up 90% of the Southern Pine timber inventory and are referred to commercially as Southern Pine” or Southern Yellow Pine”. Although not as easy to find, but there is such a thing as KDAT wood (kiln dried after treatment). Most of the weight added to treated wood comes from water used to carry the preservative components. Or, come on in to our store, where starting mid April, we will be stocking KDAT in our premium 5/4 decking, and in a 2×4 and 2×6 clear grade.

It is the greenish colored wood found in decks, walkways, retaining walls, gazebos, playsets, docks, planter boxes, picnic tables, and a range of commercial, agricultural, industrial, and institutional uses. Projects tend to go more smoothly because they are less labor intensive, and as a result, installation costs may even be less than with a more difficult wood. If I was doing another wood deck I would suck it up and do Ipe though, it is just indestructable.

We recommend a good quality oil-based or water-based stain or exterior wood water sealant product. The stain dives deep into wood surfaces to provide exceptional protection from moisture, ultraviolet rays, mold, and mildew. The KDAT process will enhance the appearance of your new deck and offer more stability within the material. Federal and state regulations mandate that treated wood be disposed of properly. Kiln Dried after Treatment or DKAT pressure treated lumber, has certain advantages that will help to preserve the new look” of your deck or other construction project. Many treated wood products do not emit any vapors and are safe for interior use.

Most KDAT suppliers recommend that the material be finished immediately and protected from the elements to maintain its stability. The sapwood, which is the outer layer of wood that carries the lifeblood of the tree, is weak but is resistant to warping, swelling and shifting. Recycled plastic polymers made from recycled shopping bags and drinking bottles are added to the mix to create this amazing composite decking board. Expose fresh wood because coatings perform best when applied to freshly exposed wood surfaces.

Some treated products, notably decking in the Pacific Northwest, are pre-stained with a stain or dye before treatment or run through a stain machine after treatment. AWPA has been the premier developer of consensus-based standards for treated wood products since 1904, which is why the building codes rely on AWPA Standards. For treated wood that is destined for manufacturing process, KDAT is necessary so wood dimensions can be accurately predicted, and equipment can be properly setup.

The pressure treatment of wood began nearly 130 years ago in response to the railroads’ need for a strong and resilient crosstie that would neither rot nor be destroyed by termites. Trex created the RainEscape product to drain water from the above deck flooring system away from any deck below, allowing dueling decks to stay dry and usable during all weather conditions. We recommend a good quality oil-based or water based stain or exterior wood water sealant product.

Consequently, they typically require a special screw designed for composite decking. The key to a good long lasting finish is to use the correct type of KDAT deck stains.

Second, if the flooring is glued down over concrete, a proper vapor retarder cannot be installed between the concrete slab and the wood flooring. This allows air to reach all sides of the lumber while applying pressure to the lumber and minimizing the chance of warping. Pressure treated timber piling in the U.S. has a documented service life of over 85 years, with no record of failure. The only types of wood flooring that should be floated are engineered wood flooring products specifically manufactured for floating.

The best advice is pick the best looking surface and install the decking best-face up. Securely fasten the deck boards and apply an annual coating of water repellent. Keep the wood stable by applying a coat of water repellent treatment onto all surfaces before installation.
