ProWood® Kiln Dried (KDAT) has all the weather-beating durability you demand from treated wood, yet it’s dried in a kiln, which dramatically reduces shrinking and warping. Pine is a common wood of choice for decks as well as many other applications, with some claims being that 80 percent of decks are still made with it. A few weeks of hot days with no rain and a little breeze for good measure should be good for decking. I always try to use Zinsser Ext Oil Primer Sealer as it locks into the wood better than latex. I would recommend that you find a better source of wood that is dried properly. Kiln drying after treatment (KDAT), will add cost to the process and the finished products, however KDAT wood tends to reduce warping, as it is a more controlled drying method. Research conducted by the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI clearly shows that even a 3-week exposure to sun and rain is too much for new wood.

In some areas you can buy treated wood that is Kiln Dried After Treatment (KDAT) or Air Dried After Treatment (ADAT). You don’t need to create your own line of decking, however, to get higher-grade treated material. When painting over a wood surface that is wet in the core (as pressure treated lumber typically is) your project can suffer from paint blistering and peeling as the moisture tries to escape. Consequently, they typically require a special screw designed for composite decking. The key to a good long lasting finish is to use the correct type of KDAT deck stains.

Second, if the flooring is glued down over concrete, a proper vapor retarder cannot be installed between the concrete slab and the wood flooring. This allows air to reach all sides of the lumber while applying pressure to the lumber and minimizing the chance of warping. The only types of wood flooring that should be floated are engineered wood flooring products specifically manufactured for floating.

The best advice is pick the best looking surface and install the decking best-face up. Securely fasten the deck boards and apply an annual coating of water repellent. Keep the wood stable by applying a coat of water repellent treatment onto all surfaces before installation. In a sunny, hot, and windy climate where it never rains your pressure treated lumber will probably be dry in a few weeks.
