While wood stains add color and bring out the beauty of the wood, clear finishes protect the wood and enhance its beauty. Note: I would urge any woman who is pregnant or if you have small kids, don’t use this stuff. Then where the Semi Problem has come up I Put the Polyurethane Let Dry and Sanded and Put a Second Coat and I had a few spots with White Marks or Streaks on a few area’s so I sanded 220 just those area’s and it is drying, but I am still seeing those whit marks. Compared to a traditional three-coat application, One Coat Polyurethane provides a crystal clear protective topcoat in a single application.
Keep Minwax PolyShades and Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner out of the reach of children and pets, and do not use either product near a source of flame, sparks or extreme heat. Use a fan in an adjacent room like a bathroom or kitchen vent that is connected to the outside, and leave it on. In warm weather you can put a box fan in a window (blowing out!) in an adjacent room.
Sheen: The sheen is dependent on the sheen of the polyurethane you use in your mix. That we people could glue the wood plate and screw the servos to the wood for easy removal or replacement. Let It Dry: It is important for one coat to be completely dry before you apply the next coat. I built a Cherry Tall Clock for a MinWax Ad Ten years ago using their Natural Cherry Polyshades.
No matter what you try sometimes, you will run into a mild battle or an all-out war trying to get things to go per the mfrs instructions; but those instructions apply to applications where everything is within certain tolerances and the wood reacts the way ‘most’ woods should react. I’m refinishing my kitchen cabinets with Minwax Ebony Stain and their Helmsman Satin Polyurethane.
But if, like us, you like to do things once the right way and hope it will last to the next generation, I’d recommend the High-Build for floors. I switched completely now because it’s much easier to apply and get a great finish and faster dry time reduces dust on the surface of a project during drying; as a bonus I’ve reduced the amount of highly flammable chemicals dramatically. After the wood conditioner has soaked in for about 15 minutes, it’s time to apply the stain.
So it’s more important to know how to deal with the inevitable bubbles than to follow instructions not to shake. Garages are good, outdoors is fine, but be aware if you’re working outside in the sunshine that you will need to work quickly so the stain doesn’t get too tacky while you’re still working with it. From there they are hung and sprayed with two coats with an automotive touch-up” spray gun with great results on the sticks and inconsistent results on the pommels (read drips in the details”). If you want color on the floors, then stain them and use a water based poly like Bona. If desired, apply stain, such as Minwax Wood Finish Stain , to unfinished wood surfaces.
I’ve used a product called Wood Bleach” along with some wood scrapers (make sure to get a french curve-like one if you have any curves). The only drawback to this system is that it takes a solid 5 hours (more would be better) between coats, and does take a little time to apply. You need a steady hand and you need to take time to learn about all the adjustments on the spray gun. The best advice I can give you on the subject of finishing wood is to experiment.
Since you’ve had so much trouble, it might be worth the time to buy or setup a couple of square feet of comparable wood flooring at your shop or house. My cork must work with water based polyurethane which means I’ve seen the issues installers have with a water based product. Kitchen tables and wooden flooring are good candidates for oil based polyurethane.
While I occasionally apply stain or urethane with a brush, especially on very small projects, I regularly use my spray guns to apply stain and urethane on wood trim, window sashes, doors and furniture. I shake my poly for the first coat, but always add mineral spirits, which slows down the drying (open time) and allows the bubbles time to escape. If you absolutely have to do it alone, just apply a coat of dye and immediately after wipe the whole piece with a slightly dampened rag with denatured alcohol, and work to blend any lap marks you may have created.
