Whether you are building wind chimes for yourself, as gifts or would like to start a great home business, these two resources are all you need to get started! Do not use these calculations for an orchestra or a musical setting unless you are certain they use A=440 Hz. An orchestra or symphony may brighten slightly and will typically tune for A=442, 43 or 44 The above chart uses A = 440 Hz. Most symphony grade instruments are shipped with A=442 Hz. Also, orchestra grade chimes typically do not go below the C5 octave.

I consulted a few musically savvy friends (Thanks Brian and Andrew!) to gather some more ideas for interesting intervals on my chosen theme of Evil & Ominous.” I ended up with quite a few ideas, and with Andrew’s help, I sampled the sound of the longest tube being struck, and recorded mp3’s of each set of notes to simulate the sound of the chimes ringing in the wind.

Support for the striker string or line from can be from the same point you use to support the chime tube. In the great heliosphere of our solar system, solar wind can’t really be called wind at all. Their centrally suspended aluminum tubes and high-density striker produce incredible tones and resonance, unlike traditional chimes you may have heard in the past.

This is how the higher-pitched chimes in the Paint-by-Numbers Approach earlier in this posting are designed, and you can get an idea how it might look by looking at the drawing there. The extra large ABS wind catcher is designed to move with steady ambient breezes from 2-3 MPH minimum to 15 MPH maximum (at which point stronger winds may tend to blow the clapper outside the tubes), measured at the location of the wind catcher.

Yard or garage sales can yield surprising results, look for a discarded metal swing set, tubular shelving, etc. I noticed some high end chimes were attached at different points and was wondering what the formula was. Important: For the dimensions given below to work, the chimes need to be made from a particular kind of tubing. No matter your taste or your budget, trust Custom Designs Florist & Gifts for quality floral gifts and arrangements. Gardening is the number one hobby in the United States, and wind chimes are pleasing accessories for gardens, decks, and patios. Jack Maegli suggested that a striker to tubes distance of 0.75-1.00 works well under moderate wind conditions.

To better understand wind turbulence mixed with single-direction winds watch this 60 second video, Bi-Directional Wind Vane VIDEO (WMV, 3.2Meg) showing a bi-directional wind vane mounted on my deck. If you want to design and build a chime set using rods rather than tubes all you have to do is set the inside diameter to zero and enter the outside diameter and type of metal into the DIY calculator. Yes, if the hole is large, relative to the diameter of the tube, it can affect the design frequency, but a small hole has no effect. These wind bells offer the finesse of material beauty and the clear ringing sound that brass produces.

I have had this patina set of chimes for several years and the patina look gets better every year and holds up well in all kinds of weather. With your help, my father and I were able to craft a wind chime by hand, filled with sentimental value. Each tube in a precision instrument is then computer tuned; the computer has been programmed to know the material and compare the sound when the tube is struck to exact pitches for the musical scale that, again, is part of the chosen design.

Note that this approach leaves a non-resonating section in the middle the chime. L&G Studio is part of the SEATTLE Outside of the Box curated by Darin Montgomery of Urbancase for Wanted Design. The good news is that with some of our innovative striker designs we can now strike a chord. For example, a chime used in an orchestra setting is typically a rapid sequence of notes with the strike note as the predominate sound, and little if no time allowed for the sustaining note.

This will allow you to make a set of resonance-tuned chimes without having to get into much detail or theorizing. There are no bad sounding chimes when the notes are properly selected, tubes are properly tuned and properly mounted. The very nature of the wind will catch enough of the chimes to rotate the entire set allowing the pendulum motion of the sail to strike more of the chimes. Because of the short distance between the striker and the chime tube, the strike is not robust but adequate.

Overtones exist and in a perfect metal where the density and the elasticity are constant, have theoretical multiples of the fundamental multiplied by X 2.76, X 5.40, X 8.93, X 13.34, X 18.64 and X 31.87. Depending on the distance between the striker and the chime tube, not all chime sets require a sail. The reason is that the natural frequencies of the enclosed body of air usually don’t relate to the pitch of the chime. We’ve yet to have fully unpacked since our big move to New York , but we are ready for the upcoming NY Design week! We do not recommend hanging the chime set where the sail can contact children, adults, or animals.

While both chimes strike almost exactly the same fundamental frequency (295 Hz vs. 290 Hz), they are of different lengths and have a slightly different timbre but sound mostly the same. Avoid the common mistakes often found in commercial chimes when you design and build a great sounding set of tubular bell chimes. They are 3.25 inches in (outer) diameter, and have a wall thickness of 0.1 inches. When the chime is supported at the fundamental frequency node, see diagram at the right, the higher partials are dampened but the fundamental strike frequency remains.

Nousaku (Japan) manufactures wind bells through a collaboration with designers and using traditional techniques acquired from producing Buddhist altar fittings. After thinking for a while about which notes I should tune the tubes to, I found that fairly large chimes are commercially available, but they are tuned to happy, consonant intervals. The loudness of chimes struck with a star striker is reduced, compared to the circular striker, because the strike energy has been distributed among the various chimes, and a harder material is required for a strong strike.

º Pick your own notes for up to eight chimes and hear them in three different play modes (scale, random and tuning)! Two 8” cables were used in each chime with which loops were created at each end. These bamboo wind chimes are hand crafted in a small rural area of Bali specializing in bamboo crafts. Use an abrasive metal cutting saw blade in a radial arm saw, a chop saw or a table saw.

All you really need to do is support the chime tube at the correct location (22.4% from the end) to allow for the best possible sound from that tube or rod. One thing I wanted to mention to other readers who may be getting ready to make their own chimes – I found that the method used to hang each pipe can have a significant effect on the sound of the pipe as it is struck.
