Popular Bible Verse ‘Plans To Prosper You’ Among Most Misinterpreted

Three weeks before I graduated from high school, the gifts began pouring in. I got a wad of cash, which elated me, and also a pile of presents I wasn’t sure what to do with. It’s not that I see the Bible as only historical and not supernatural, it’s that I am trying to show how we are to receive the Bible on its terms, not on ours. This verse kept echoing throughout my head and i couldn’t find which book it was from. This of course doesn’t only apply to Jeremiah 29:11, it applies to every word of the Bible. Do a search for the words great commission” and you will not find them in any bible. I know you have big plans for me. Give me the wisdom to seek you first in everything.

Accepting God’s plans for our lives means embracing Him as the sovereign God of this universe. On the other hand, I can relate to anyone who clings to this verse, it was once my life verse too. It begins with context, something Western readers often ignore when reading scripture (or they assume that the context from which the author writes is similar to their own). As a side note, the people in Jeremiah’s day wouldn’t have been walking around quoting this verse or stitching it on pillows and snuggies, because the plans to prosper them in the way that the Lord is talking about weren’t going to come for another 70 years. I liked it so much I even bought my wife a purse with that verse stitched onto it. So I can understand the draw and I can even understand the reasoning I have seen and heard. But the verse can also stand for much more dangerous meanings for some who cling to it as a life verse. God has very specific plans and if I get those wrong then the rest of my life will be spent in joyless wandering as I work to get back on the right path. Thankyou Liz, this verse is one of my favorites for many reasons……but it became more precious when I think about it in context, how gracious our Father is to watch over His captives …..and lead us back to Himself! Always remember that God has already prepared a place for you to succeed and to learn.

Even if you’d never picked up a Bible before and you opened it to Jeremiah 29:11, the first thing you should do is read the verses immediately before it and after it. Father, I am so glad that You know the plans You have for me. I am so thankful that Your plans are to prosper me and to give me a hope and a future. If a verse is a difficult to understand, sometimes it can be helpful to look the verse up in a different version of the Bible.

He wants you to ‘delight’ in Him, ie. to seek Him and to love Him and spend time with Him in prayer and Bible study. The point here is that if we seek the Lord above all else and with our whole heart, He will then and only then bless and prosper us. This is our reward for serving Him and diligently seeking Him.
