In the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, under the leadership of Presidents Joseph M. Pettit (1972-86) and John P. Crecine (1987-94), Georgia Tech grew in stature nationally and internationally, broadening course offerings through a new College of Computing and the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts (named for Atlanta mayor Ivan Allen Jr. ), dramatically expanding its research program, and embarking on an ambitious initiative to increase the number of masters and doctoral degrees granted.
The Human Factors Engineering/Ergonomics graduate program at the University of Buffalo focuses on application of the sciences of engineering, physiology, psychology, and computer science to the design of working and living environments with explicit consideration of the physical and mental characteristics of users.” Students will dive into human-computer interaction, math modeling of human decision-making, workplace design, cognitive engineering, and much more.
Focusing on how people interact with their environments and equipment, the Human Factors certificate from the University of Utah helps students comprehend the design of equipment people use and how they use it. These issues, when examined alongside the political and cultural changes that have occurred with the coming of the information age, illustrate a strong confounding of Industrial Design in the professional world – the field has become much more complicated, and issues relating to product form and function are dwarfed by topics of internationalization, convergence and time to market.
In the College of Engineering, Georgia Tech offers aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering, industrial and systems engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, and polymer, textile, and fiber engineering.

It is not the goal of this paper to argue for the removal of traditional craft and form oriented techniques within Industrial Design; instead, a program grounded in craft and fundamental design skills can easily be supplemented with these new techniques in an effort to shape designers capable of excelling in the professional world of Industrial Design.
Ted holds a Masters of Industrial Design from Georgia Tech, a Bachelors of Inventive Design Engineering from Purdue University, and has taught design studio courses at Georgia Tech, Drexel University, the School of Visual Arts in NYC, and the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID) in Denmark, where he also serves as permanent advisor to the NEST, the institute’s design-driven incubator.
Students and faculty in the University of North Georgia’s (UNG) Department of Physical Therapy hosted nine industrial design students from the Georgia Institute of Technology and their faculty team leader June 29 through July 3 for a weeklong conference aimed at building innovative assistive technology for several clients with physical disabilities.
As lower level students struggle for direction, the upperclassman begin to articulate and describe the specific design process that must occur to successfully complete the assigned task; they realize that the opportunity statement must be restructured, that data must be collected, and that some form of immersive synthesis must occur before attempting to build anything.
The program includes a broad course of study with influence and faculty from a multitude of departments, including Aviation’s Human Factors Division, the Departments of Psychology, Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering, Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Computer Science, and the Human-Computer Intelligent Interaction Group at the Beckman Institute.
Many of the undergraduate options leading to careers in human factors or human-centered design and engineering can be used as stepping stones for more focused studies in the discipline at the graduate level. Georgia Tech’s psychology programs equip students for a variety of careers, including computer software design. Then it was on to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA where he earned a BS in the renowned Transportation Design Program. The new project with Georgia Tech aims to improve Jack through advanced analysis of geometric shapes and action optimization to make it easier to build simulations on a broader scale.
As a design team, we decided to draw from nanotechnology research to create a science fiction concept product. Students get to design real projects as well as prepare for careers and graduate programs in design, social sciences, engineering, and management. The Product Development and Manufacturing Technology degree from Arizona State University is based on the belief that putting products on the market with success starts with a comprehensive sense of the humans who use those products.
