Do NOT use wood that is treated with chemicals as the chemicals will end up in your garden soil and crops. Used coconut cloth in the bottom however you could use newspaper, compost or anything that isn’t harmful to the soil and your plants to keep the dirt in. To ensure that your plant’s roots have plenty of room to grow, it’s a good idea to dig out the existing sod and loosen the soil with a shovel or garden fork to a depth of eight to twelve inches. You don’t say what type of nematode or which plants they affected, but generally speaking, crop rotation is the best way to avoid harmful varieties of nematode affecting your crops in subsequent years – a five year rotation is ideal for most crops. I’m constructing a garden bed designed to keep out the local deer, racoons, squirrels, possums, skunks and all other veggie eating critters. Free palettes will require more work (dismantling, cutting, planning) but, if you love the rustic look, the price may be right. Just make sure that the bed drains well and doesn’t collect too much of the rain water. Other commonly used woods are railroad ties or landscaping timbers-if using railroad ties, be sure they are well-aged and no longer seeping creosote, which can be detrimental to plants. Though a permanent raised bed garden can overcome most drainage problems, it’s still not ideal to build one in an area that doesn’t drain well. If the raised bed is built on top of concrete it will need to be at least 40cm (16″) deep to grow annual vegetables, and preferably deeper. I also don’t like to waste wood so I tend to build according to the wood available: 8 foot lengths are used for 4-foot wide beds and 6-foot lengths are used for 3-foot wide beds.

I put a lot of work and money into our raised bed garden but I am constantly amazed at the production we get out of it. I enclosed one bay with hardware cloth bird netting and have 6 blueberry bushes and they produce more than we can eat in a year. The soil could technically be deeper than this, however, the soil at the top will likely be much drier than the lower soil, so you’d want to make sure to that the plants you use can access this deeper soil moisture, like tomatoes, which can buried deep into the bed. These knots can give your raised beds more character, but they also require vigilance in making the knots so that they don’t diminish the functionality of the board. Raised beds tend to dry out relatively quickly, and are often used to make it possible to grow a garden where soil drainage is poor, so you should not normally experience problems with drainage in a raised bed. Using a circular saw, cut two of the 10-foot boards into 60-inch lengths for the first tier box. Hand watering will require dragging a hose throughout the garden; uniform bed spacing and layout will make this task easier. Cedar is generally considered the go-to wood to use for raised beds because of its hardness and its durability – lasting 15-25 years if properly installed. Check that the boards are level, then build the walls up to the top of the posts.
However, I did notice that you mentioned using railroad ties for raised garden beds and I think you should mention that while these are great for flower beds and the like, they should never be used near vegetables because they are chock full of carcinogens. This is because you don’t need to leave spaces to walk through, because you don’t need to ever step on the garden bed, ever. I’ve used those to build raised beds and compost bins and they work wonderfully.
While the length of a raised bed will be partly determined by available materials, keep in mind that the cost of lumber increases noticeably if the length is more than 12 feet. Raised beds are sturdy enough to support a trellis, even one large enough for pole beans which grow to 8′ tall. By nature, the soil in raised beds can be catered to your needs, so if you know you’ll be planting onions in the bed, you can be sure to incorporate plenty of compost. Lay out the first layer of the garden bricks, adjusting for size and making sure that the bricks fit snugly.
To keep them out of your veggies, you might consider adding a galvanized mesh garden cloth underneath your beds. Put the legs in a nice little stack like this, simulating their placement on the base. Think about it: you don’t want to have to clamber inside your raised garden bed box to access inner plants, and 4′ is about as far as most people can reach. So even the soil mix can help reduce how much water gets used, and wasted, in a garden bed.
