If you’re removing all of the wood in the house, or at least on that level, then you can just rip out all the floor without any regard for whether you damage the other floor boards. Larger boards may be edge-glued (two or more boards glued together to provide a wider size) or solid. Owning and using a moisture meter is an inexpensive way for finish carpenters to predict and avoid wood movement problems that could require costly repairs. If the metal head of a hammer or hatchet doesn’t allow expansion, or if the wetting is only on one side and the thickness of the wood prevents the cells from expanding, they become compressed into oval shapes. Many varnishes and lacquers are available, and some of these are specifically formulated for use on wood utensils, bowls, and cutting boards. Moisture exchange will happen more rapidly at warmer temperatures, but there is no thermal movement of wood worth measuring. Wood is hygroscopic, which means its MC will fluctuate based on the relative humidity (RH) of the surrounding air. Then, when it is installed in a warm, dry, heated location, it will gradually lose this added moisture (dry out) and shrink, causing gaps between the boards.

Not only is it extra kind to your knife blade, it’s also the safest material (because bacteria have a much lower survival rate on wood than on plastic ), and it’s gorgeous, too. Ultimately, I chose these pine boards from Lowes which are a little over 3″ wide, 5/16″ thick, and 8′ long. Gaps between wood floorboards may occur for several reasons, but the common underlying cause is a moisture problem.
