There are a variety of options for permanently sealing and waterproofing butcher block wood countertops, commonly used in kitchens. I had some wood rot that had penetrated the surface on oak and teak.. This was dug out and I dried the goodish wood as much as possble treated with rot killer then soaked the wood with the epoxy mix, left it for a week to cure. Both Part A and Part B are as thin as water, which allows it to penetrate into wood far beyond the dry-rotted area. An exterior LPU paint job over CPES and epoxy could last you over ten years without the need to recoat. The mixed epoxy and hardener may be diluted with as much as an equal volume of solvent.
Surface application by brush or roller will still extend the life of the wood product by years and outperform any primer presently on the market. Coat the wood as soon as is practical and do not store it where it is exposed to sunlight. I’ve got to say that I’m no expert on this because I’ve never reached that point in a boat build. A good finish on the ends or the use of rot-resistant wood will help, but there’s something more you can do, and it’s fairly quick and simple.
For new wood or old wood in GOOD CONDITION, use a random orbital sander (Dewalt makes the best, you can’t miss ’em, they are yellow!). To me the ideal wood for drinking glasses would be sugar maple (Acer saccharum). Penetrating epoxy over stain and then varnished with 6-8 coats of varnish is a great way to finish wood. I had some left over in a cup which had set up about 3/4 to an inch could not get it out no matter what i hit it with a hammer to try to get it out and all the happened is it broke away the plastic cup to the top edge of epoxy. I also believe that if you find anyone that has a boat made of encapsulated Ash, and they are suffering a rot problem, chances are there will be some place where the epoxy encapsulation has become corrupted. If the intended use of CPES is to deeply infuse some pulpy wood with a weak sponge of epoxy, that’s a worthy purpose for some users, but not everything I’d want in an undercoat for finish. This is because the edges were wetted out with a light coat of liquid epoxy before the thickened epoxy of the fillet was applied. It is not a bad idea to find some wood to practice on before you start on your woodie.

Not only that, but a topical sealer is nothing more than two to three layers of clear plastic that can be scratched and eroded over time. The second and more complex method is to use a vacuum to get better impregnation of the epoxy into the wood. You can seal wood quite well with epoxy – you always need two coats (1 coat cuts water take up approx 50% – two coats about 90% according to my personal tests).
I don’t know much about wood for body modification but the article on Wikipedia says that wood is a great material but needs special care. Or Porous materials like wood require what is called a seal coat of epoxy resin in order to prevent air from escaping into the fluid.

On the squirt, I encapsulated the interior battens, frames and plywood just before I put on the deck. The underneath of the deck itself was pre-coated with 3 coats of epoxy before it was installed. I have used this remarkable product, also known as CPES in America and Lignu Impregnating Epoxy in Scandinavia, for a number of years now. Contaminating newly mixed epoxy with partially hardened epoxy can accelerate the reaction, leaving you less time to work.

Try boards with 2-3 coats of wiping varnish, 3 coats of brushed varnish, 3 coats of marine/spar varnish, and then one with an epoxy coating. Using this combination of products, if a new boat were built with Ash anywhere in its construction, it would be highly unlikely that rot would occur for many, many seasons. Not all epoxy formulations are suitable for sealing a wooden boat against moisture.
