Cedar is a lightweight and dimensionally stable wood that lies flat and stays straight. Using other substrates and finishes generally increases maintenance costs by a large amount. A good exterior grade latex is so good nowadays you don’t really need to go the oil-based route. Water-based finishes release fewer odors than oil-based varnish or lacquer, but still contain solvents. Well, I think it’s going to last longer than anyone thinks… It’s an exterior poly. Plus if you apply extra coats of varnish at the start of the project, you can possibly add several more years to the life of the finish. The finish depends on what you’re trying to achieve and what you can apply successfully.

There are other wood hardening products out there but the Minwax stuff is the only thing I’ve any experience with. Sanding is the most important thing in surface preparation – especially when a clear finish is wanted. It produces a durable high gloss finish by being wiped on in two or three coats. For smaller jobs a 250ml can of timber stain will cover approximately 3 to 4m2, enough to finish a medium size chest of drawers, a desk, four chairs or a bookcase. If the liquid becomes fairly clear and there is a muddy layer on the bottom, you have a pigment based stain.

Best results with varnish over raw wood are obtained with applying a first coat of varnish diluted 50-50 with mineral spirits, then applying 2-3 additional coats of slightly thinned varnish (1 part thinner : 9 parts varnish). Testers applied dozens of exterior wood finishes (22 one-part varnishes, six two-part varnishes, 18 synthetics and satins/varnish alternatives, and eight teak oils and sealers) to small panels of bare solid teak.

Use lighter stains for deck boards; heavier pigmented types show wear faster and are more difficult to renew. Your deck should not have standing water if the wood planks were laid crown up. Your deck surface will last many more years if it is constructed this way. Consider a maintenance schedule for these products that requires repainting every 5-7 years. I think most here will agree that the extra time it takes to use (whether mixing, applying, dry time, etc.) will be more than made up by the long lasting effect or beauty of the finish. The color may well fade and I don’t think pine was a very good exterior choice.

Grain direction, whether edge-grained or flat-grained, also affects how well wood accepts a finish. The solid wood furniture that comes into our home is usually left in the garage for a period of time (until it doesn’t stink anymore). Clear, transparent wood sealers are a fourth choice, and they make sense if you want to preserve the natural, bright, uncoloured look of new lumber as long as possible. The result is a finish that’s much more resistant to water, solvents, abrasion, and impacts than traditional varnishes. As the film inevitably breaks down and peels (mostly from UV exposure), it usually requires complete stripping of the finish before fresh coats can be applied. Anyhow, I put a wash coat of 1lbs super blond shellac first before assembly then after assembly I put on 3 coats of general finishes outdoor oil. Although no-film stains are easier to maintain than either tinted of opaque film-forming finishes, they don’t offer much protection again surface cracking of wood caused by weathering. Lacquer combines nitrocellulose solids in a mixture of solvents to create a film finish that dries quickly and adds a faint amber tint. These properties also make Cedar a very popular material for hot tub and sauna areas.

When priming cedar or redwood, use an alkyd primer or a stain-blocking acrylic latex primer. The longer the wood dries, however, the greater the risk that UV radiation will damage the wood surface, interfering with the paint’s adhesion. I finished my house exterior (cedar barn board and shingle) with Valhalla – LifeTime wood preservative and it’s worked out fine (so far). It gives you the deep penetrating protection of an oil finish with the protective coating of a varnish.

Editor’s Note: Jim started working on wood in his grandfather’s church furniture shop at age 13 and learned wood finishing there from the shop’s head finisher. Fill holes with an exterior grade putty, colour matched to your finish to prevent rust stains, then sand smooth. I think Waterlox is the prettier finish and holds up well even in high wear (floor), but if it’s going to be in direct sunlight, I gotta recommend the Sikkens Cetol. Nevertheless, the normal life of a finish will be shortened by degradation and discoloration.
