While I’m wrapping up the final editing on part 2 of the Teak Shoe Rack I keep thinking about other projects that are just as quick and easy to build. Woodworking for beginners is more than building things; it is expressing your creativity in all that you do. And you craft each and every project with your hands! For plane blades, chisels and most other woodworking tools, the first requirements for sharpening a new tool are to flatten and polish the back. The goal is to get their attention, and let it be known you wish to pursue a woodworking career.
You might get a better idea of what particular type of woodworking you’d enjoy, be it with power or hand tools. Korn includes two attractive and useful projects – a small bench and a side table with a door and drawer – providing you the opportunity to practice skills and develop confidence with tools. Grits typically range from about 20 to 1000, 20 being extremely course and 1000 being extremely fine.
Cutting boards are a great first project for the novice woodworker because the process will introduce you to a number of basic woodworking tools and techniques and you end up with a project that is practical and attractive. With no more than a couple of months’s experience, I started a woodworking business using this book as a guide. I would say that the HF tile saw (the large one at least) is NOT crappy at all as I have used it. I also have a belt sander and the oscillating multi tool (corded) from that company, and one of my smaller compressors. For the hand tool purist, a shoulder plane is used to do the heavy lifting in forming rabbets and tenons. All the cool tools help you build things either faster or better, but arent always necessary (unless you are making a proposal to the wife for a new tool purchase). The only crap I have noticed so far is just most of the saws and cordless tools.
