Uneven Stain Absorption

Exterior decks made of hardwoods such as Ipe, Meranti, Mahogany, and other exotic woods add beauty and value to your home. If you sand it correctly the second time, you won’t even be able to tell the filler is there once you’re ready to stain. There is one place on the wood back where the veneer is slightly chipped on the edge. Make sure to drive in any popped nails first – or even better, replace them with deck screws. As soon as I lay the stain down and wipe the streak appears. Floor sanders can only sand surfaces that are perfectly flat, and deck boards are slightly curved. The stain will be absorbed into these grooves and will highlight their appearance.

If your finish contains a solvent that can re-dissolve the binder in your stain, particles of stain pigment (even if they were fully dry to the touch before top-coating) will blotch or seep into your finish. The stain colour is affected by the gloss level of the product you choose to topcoat your stain. If you do have areas that are more sanded back than others there is a chance that you will see a slight difference in the finish so it is best to try and get the wood as even as possible for application. Each step of the cleaning process opens the pores of the wood more to make the wood more absorbent.

Then I brushed on a coat of Weathered Oak over the Special Walnut It’s very sheer, so I let the stain sit on the wood for about 5-8 minutes before wiping it off. If you have a brand-new deck made of treated lumber (as opposed to cedar or redwood), you should wait at least a few weeks before sealing it for the first time. There were a few spots I had to go back over and apply a little more of the oxidizing stain that left a few blotches, but I’ll sand them down a bit to even it out. So there is no dipping your StainStick into the stain, it actually comes out of the pad as you rub the StainStick on the wood surface so you get nice even coverage! IT would be very helpful if some of the wood webs had some info on refinishing guitars. Lisa, make sure that your wood is sanded sooooo smooth (finishing up with 220 grit) and apply the stain with a cloth over your finger. The good news is that this will take you a LOT less time because you won’t be waiting on any stain to sit. My cabinets are treated such that they will not take a regular stain without completely removing the finish.

I agree too, it covered more like paint than stain, came out way too glossy, and hid the wood grain. Oh, and BTW, we are also seeing lots of people painting their oak cabinets white and then going dark on the hardwood floors. Hi i am currently refinishing all my woodwork in a spare bedroom on the first floor. Even though water-based stain dries to the touch very quickly, it’s important that after you apply the stain, you let the piece of furniture sit overnight before finishing. Attempt to obtain a darker colour by allowing any unabsorbed stain to dry on top of the wood, as this will later peel off. To prolong stain life, you should protect exterior stained concrete surfaces with a clear sealer and interior floors with a good floor wax. The percentage of solids in the sealer determines how completely the pores in the wood are sealed.

Just as with a good finish job, the first step to a quality staining job is making sure the floor is sanded well. Leaving the majority of the stain on the petal to ‘soak’ for awhile, I moved on to my next petal and repeated! The only time I’ve used stain over paint is when I want a distressed/antique look over my paint color. A wood conditioner can really make a huge difference when you want a nice uniform stain job!
