Wood Burning 101

This Dremel Woodburning Tool offers a multipurpose tool for wood burning, soldering, hot knife cutting of Styrofoam and plastics, cutting and fusing rope. A build-up of carbon & other materials will hinder heat transfer & cause the pen to skip on the wood while burning. This not only keeps the pen cooler but it is more comfortable & will also help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. Be advised that wood stove catalytic convertors are specific to the stove and are usually not interchangeable. I’ve just had a clearview 750 installed and am loving it. As for boiler stove, yes it will cost you more as you will need additional plumbing and some form of solution to allow the Wood stove and the Gas Central Heating work together or separately – see some of my earlier posts. I had a lot of problems with the grain of the pine wood – though some sanding might have helped there.

This is especially important because the newer brass tips made in China are thinner & not as sturdy as the ones made in the USA. For mainstream stoves, replacement parts can be ordered from a stove retailer or directly from the manufacturer. An old or poorly installed wood stove can result in higher maintenance costs, greater risk of smoke in your home, and more environmental pollution. Hi, i would like some advice on whether to go for a wood burning or multi fuel stove. I find I have a lot more control over my burner when I am able to hold it more like a pen.

There is a turbo burner which brings in air (not pre-heated) ,allowing plenty of oxygen into the rear and top of the stove, thus burning off gases which normally do not ignite. While a very few older stoves have carefully fitted ground cast iron surfaces that seal reasonably well without gaskets, virtually all modern wood heaters use gasket material around the loading doors to seal them. I burnt each on the exact same material and I tried to keep a consistent pattern for each test so you can easily compare one burning profile to another.

I always recommend using the lowest heat setting that will get the job done – in other words, if you can turn the heat down & still do the job, DO IT. In addition, hold your pen at an angle so the heat from the tip can rise into the air, not into the pen body & your fingers. Biomass boilers, like stoves, burn wood to generate heat, and can be used along with a stove, or on their own.

If you want to do really heavy burning for such as house nameplates then extra powerful points are on sale or again you can make them yourself without specialized tools. I also leave about an inch or so of wood ashes on top of the bake oven box, to prevent my bread from turning into crispy critters. Wood really should be burnt on an ash bed, made a huge difference to my stove once I did that. These different tips also produce different effects, similar to the way different paintbrush styles create different effects.

Yes, I know they are cheaper and so tempting, so how about the compromise that many other burners use: they have a set of fixed tip pens that they use for the majority of their work but they also have an interchangeable pen with a set of tips that they use more infrequently. In my experience, I get the stove pretty hot fairly quickly by burning dry pallet wood which are perfect for that job as most people want to have the Central Heating working or hot water available quickly – and I prefer not to use any Gas where ever possible.

It’s not always easy for people to visualize in their minds what can be done with each pen just by looking at the photo & description of possible uses. We have recently acquired 2 wood burning stoves and have just ordered some log storage which is on its way to us. I’m glad I have a choice, because to have the wood stove running during the summer would make the house very hot. Also we have not found a way to keep the house warm at night and always wake up to a very cold house any tips or products that could be recommended.


The tips have different contact sites that are used to produce different effects. It comes with five different tips and I still like to use it for background filling. I have not used this tool for wood..rather I used it on leather and suede for etching… but since it IS a woodburning, it should burn the wood…. the depth of the burn is controlled by your hand pressure and speed… the slower you go and deeper you press, the more intense the burn will be. If a catalytic element has pieces missing or if the coating shows signs of flaking, replacement is the only option. Replacement glass can be cut to size by a specialty wood heating store or sweep.

So, even though the BPH is an excellent interchangeable pen, it still hasn’t got as good a conduction as a soldered Fixed Tip Pen.

Particularly as we don’t run a stove overnight, I was not sure they would be any use to us. However, after starting our wood burning stove with kindling and burning a few blazers, which quickly heated up, I stuck a bark log on to try. The other thing is that wood you purchase will not be split into anything like small enough pieces for the average stove. So once the fire blazing nicely AND I have a nice amber burning base that is ideal time to use the Blazer logs making sure that the airflow is reduced from below (my biggest mistake in keeping it open following some bad advice) and reducing the airwash.

A few months ago we decided to install a multi fuel wood burner in our lounge, to give a little warmth on cold summer days / evenings, we are so impressed, we are thinking of replacing our old Rayburn with a Wood-Burning-Multifuel-Stove-Range-Oven-Cooker-Back-Boiler-Hot-Water. The tool is comfortable to use, and its nice to place it on the little stand while it is hot. If the burner is relatively new it should be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty & you should contact them for a replacement. A: To make your tips last longer: NEVER use sandpaper of any grit to remove carbon.

In many urban and rural areas, smoke from wood burning is a major contributor to air pollution. Reload your wood stove by adding at least three pieces of wood each time, on and behind the mound of hot coals. It is also possible to keep the stove continually burning without any effort (again a little light research will help with this). Polished tips burn smoother without grabbing the wood, remain clean longer & are easier to clean.

If you are not ready to pick up a chainsaw and/or wood-splitting maul then you will need to buy seasoned hardwood (not conifers and their kind – wood like ash, beech or oak are best) already split and cut to size from a dealer (mostly located out in the country but they may deliver, but do it before there is snow on the ground). I would recommend this one if you want to have the feel for it, and find out whether you like the burning art.

This appliance has been tested using seasoned wood logs and manufactured briquetted smokeless fuel (Ancit) for closed appliances, sized between 20g and 140g. Make sure your cord is plugged in all the way by gently pushing it down as far as you can into the burner & do the same thing with the pen side. When linked the gas boiler will be used only to top up if the wood stove is not generating enough heat. Has a little wire stand to lay it on when it’s cooling, and quite a number of exchangeable tips for soldering, etc.

I would like to echo for the readers the advice given by Will on his recent post on how best to use a wood burning stove. This tutorial will give you a nice compilation of techniques and tricks for wood burning in any level of detail. Baffles in wood heaters reflect heat towards the fire, increase the length of the flame path and create a chamber for secondary combustion, all of which are essential for clean burning and high efficiency. Colwood used to recommend annealing their tips but it’s best to follow their instructions.
