Wood putty, also called plastic wood, is a substance used to fill imperfections, such as nail holes, in wood prior to finishing It is often composed of wood dust combined with a binder that dries and a diluent (thinner), and, sometimes, pigment Pore fillers used for large flat surfaces such as floors or table tops generally contain silica instead of or in addition to wood dust. Caulk: this is flexible acrylic mastic (such as Painter’s Mate), and the best thing to use for filling any gaps that may appear between your skirting board and wall, your doorframe and the wall, or at the edges of shelves that are going to be painted. Because it dries so fast, there’s a short amount of time you have to work with this stuff – unlike Wood Filler where you can pretty much take your time. Because polyester filler offers good adhesion, easy sanding, and low shrinkage, it works well for several wood and metal fill applications.
Water-based fillers are ready to use and do not require mixing hence they are more user-friendly. At this time, you should remove the excess paste before the filler becomes too hard as it is very difficult to remove then. Wipe away dust with a soft towel or use a shop vacuum to clean up. Fill the hole or dent with wood putty and spread it out with a putty knife. My home was built in 2003 and I have problems with my exterior wood trim (1X4’s)and fascia boards (2X10’s). It comes in ten colours to match Minwax Wood Finish stains and does not harden.
I tint my filler to match before applying it and keep some in an airtight container. I have had problems with large wood putty plugs that dry with indentations or with cracks and needed to go back for second or third applications to get them smooth and full. The ColorPutty Brand putty is the easiest of the putties to apply by far, both water-base and oil-base.
Then mix a small batch of filler and add some of the consolidant to the filler to reach the desired consistency. Unlike slower drying water or solvent based wood fillers that cure by evaporation, Bondo® Wood Filler chemically cross links to cure for a faster, more durable repair. To mend essential load bearing elements a special wood hardener rather than an ordinary filler is probably your best option. If there is still sawdust remaining, try using an air compressor to clean the surface.
I wouldn’t use it for the kind of project that Barb is demonstrating here, but for particleboard, rotted wood, or other special jobs, it’s great. It takes some practice to get use to working with Bondo, but it dries VERY hard, very quickly, and very smooth (with no cracking!), and is very easy to sand. But the advice I would give to a novice is also empty the dustbag at 80 as well, then do the 100 grit and use the 100 grit dust to fill the floor (and the 80 grit dust if your run out of 100 grit dust).

Silicone wood filler is a good wood putty for hardwood floors because it expands and contracts with humidity fluctuations. The main problem in using putty is matching the colour of the putty to that of the wood. Absorption rates vary between different types of wood putties and different species of wood. When staining a project, test the wood putty and stain on a piece of scrap wood.
