Raised Garden Beds

Planning a vegetable garden layout before you start working the soil, buying seeds or plants is an important step. If you want to add functionality to the planter box, you could add a bottom shelf to it. As you an see in the image, all you need to do is to attach the 2×2 cleats to the frame of the planter and lock it into place with galvanized screws. I’ll focus mainly on timber raised bed construction here, though I’ll cover a few other methods too. Narrow planters work well along a railing or fence, and as garden privacy screens, with matching trellises. Permanent enclosed beds, built to the correct height and width (usually about two feet high and three wide) make it possible to garden from a wheelchair.

We’ve got several of these now, (I say WE, but it’s actually my hubby who did all the work while I made the lemonade) but we started by making a garden on top of an old coffee table! After organizing your seed box and Making a Seed List , the next step is to figure out how everything will fit into the garden. This is it. I don’t pretend to be an expert and if you’re looking for a tutorial that would be certified by someone with a Bachelors in Raised Beds – this isn’t it. But I’ll share what we did, in hopes that it’s helpful. You can buy garden soil or potting mix in bags, or economize by mixing your native soil with homemade compost.

All of our planter boxes are made from durable cedar protected by a non-toxic waterproof sealant that is safe for vegetable gardening. The installation around and over the gates was quite a study in human tenacity but I was sure no raccoon would get in. We weren’t crazy about the look of all those yellow insulators marching around our garden fence, but I was looking forward to wonderful harvests of everything—, particularly sweet corn. Planter bottoms usually are slatted, with some type of semi-permeable cloth barrier which permits drainage. In most cases, cedar is the best wood to use for garden beds because cedar is naturally rot resistant.

The vegibox consists of a cedar box supported by an indestructable 2×4 pine frame that will most likely be capable of supporting 2 to 3 times the load it will ever see. Raised beds become even more efficient when watered with drip irrigation or soaker hoses on timers. I have a great project to keep you busy this weekend: pick a good sunny spot in your yard and build a raised vegetable bed!

All the other materials are available at home centers or garden/landscape centers.) To give the box a nice finished look, we routed the boards and sanded the faces and cap. For years, I’d been putting up a temporary short electric fence around the corn, usually after the first invasion in spite of my repeated garden notes to put the fence up early. You can use landscape fabric if you want to line the base, though a raised bed can be placed straight onto a patio without a liner.

This step wasn’t included in the DIY segment on the episode but this is an important part of protecting the exterior of the house from the moisture and grime of the pallet garden. You can also create beautiful custom shapes using the raised beds and a number of materials. Assembling a wooden raised garden bed kit will usually require some basic tools (electric drill, primarily).
