The development of the hydraulic turbine wheels with their improved efficiency (>67%) opened up an alternative path for the installation of water wheels in existing mills, or redevelopment of abandoned mills. To protect the pump from foreign matter, I wrapped the intake with aluminum screening and later made up a gravity-operated sand trap—from some 2 inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe, a T, a 90 degree elbow, and a bit of woven filter packing—which I placed in line between the foot valve and the pump to catch and settle out the debris. I will be building our water feature and adding the waterwheel to it next summer.
I agree with Simon’s comments of October 15th 2013 in that the design does appear to suffer some inefficiencies due to water influx at the sides, cavitation etc. When building the wheel you have to take into consideration the scale and the materials. This has two sets of blades or buckets running in opposite directions, so that it can turn in either direction depending on which side the water is directed. But the energy produced from the flow of water depends on the height, or head, that the water falls.
They are also cheap and simple to build and have the endearing virtue of extracting power from the flow twice; once on entry to the wheel and once on exit from the wheel and, therefore, constitute a ‘double-acting’ turbine. It is relatively light and with the turbine itself cranked out of the water the system can be towed by a light boat to a new location.
Another option would be to use a permanent magnet automotive alternator from though I’ve not tested performance with one, it would be my choice with a larger water wheel. Because there was only about 4 inches of fall in the part of the stream bordering our land, an overshot waterwheel was out of the question. This will reduce the amount of power needed to drive the cooker while also reducing the amount of material that you need to build the frame. If you don’t need electricity you may adapt the water wheel to grind grain, to cut wood, strengthen iron or to sharpen tools.
