We’ve split the fitting of the gate hinges into two parts; if you’ve not yet fitted the hinges to the gates, then this should be done first – fitting the hinges to the gates. But on light doors for most cabinets, the ones from Ace hardware with or without ball ends are more than sufficient. Inset: As on face-frame cabinets, inset door on frameless cabinets fit within the cabinet opening and sit flush with the front edges of the cabinet. In early America, hinges that looked like that would’ve been a sign of an inferior blacksmith. It is then placed in a special press that will apply pressure either mechanically or with a vacuum to press the artwork against the mount board while applying a high temperature to activate the adhesive in the tissue.
The primary advantage of the loose-pin hinge is that it enables you to remove the door for any purpose without unscrewing the hinges. This may seem like extra work, but it makes hanging doors so much simpler and faster, I can’t imagine doing it any other way. Custom designs, such as the curved hinges pictured below, can be created so the radius of the hinge matches the radius of the door. Strap hinges, T hinges and continuous hinges are special types of hinges used only on certain projects.
A hook gauge is used to set the distance in from the edge of the door and can be positioned to either side for use on both ends of the door. Align and tape the box edges: A simple box hinge is a great introduction to surface-mounted hinges. For small cabinet hinges like these, the safest way to lay out the ends of the mortise is to extend these tick marks with a square. A butt-style pintle leaf can mount to the inside of the frame with the pintle pin located at the edge of the opening.
With the fences turned all of the way in, the cup hole will just break through the edge of the door. To avoid confusion it is best to use hinges from one manufacturer for the entire project. Mortised hinge: A hinge that requires the cutting of a mortise or recess in the door or cabinet to fit the hinge leaves for proper mounting. Prior to loosening the old hardware, the doors were shimmed to keep them in their current position. We still have stock in these older inset cabinet hinges but the finish selection is limited to 5 finishes (polished brass, antique brass, chrome, satin nickel and oil rubbed bronze).
Larger objects or those on heavy paper will require one or more additional hinges evenly spaced along the top edge. Some hinges will let the door open just beyond 90°, but others offering a much greater degree of opening are available. Above was a description of how you would most commonly install a European hinge. The renovation of this historic fire house, pictured to the right, used strap hinges mounted on the inside of the doors to allow them to swing in, as the building was originally designed. Another type of overlay is a Variable Overlay, these only come in a face mount.
Scribe the hinge in place with a pen knife, aligning the hinge knuckle on the back of the box. As someone who has played around with both less expensive stamped hinges as well as higher end (like Brusso) solid brass hinges, I’ve always felt that the cheaper models have way too much slop in them – something Garrett referred to in the article. Consider completing the space with a glass swinging door and a fixed glass or a centered door flanked my two glass panels. The design permits a swing-away of the storm or screen door without interference from the hinges. Surface-mounted is as the name applies; the hinges get installed directly to the door.
The slightgap at the back of the box ensures that the front of the box will close tightly even when the box changes size due to changes in moisture content. The other consideration you have to make when learning how to install door hinges is determining whether you want to use surface-mounted hinges or recessed hinges. T-hinges and folded hinges are simply strips of acid-free tape used to hold the print in place. For example, a 270° hinge will allow the door to swing back against the cabinet side.
When you’re satisfied, drive the third screw into the hinge, positioning it near the end of the slot to ensure that the door won’t wiggle out of place. Glass Style: If you have your sights set on a certain style of glass, such as a color tint or pattern, you may only have one choice for glass thickness: 3/8-inch glass. This method has, for me, eliminated Garrett’s shimming steps; I haven’t shimmed hinges for many years.
Standard strap hinges are used for manually-operated wood or metal doors that are surface mounted to wood, formed metal, or steel jamb frames. When used in a frame, the mat keeps the photograph from touching – and adhering to – the frame’s glass. Now, hold the door in place against the cabinet and transfer these centerlines onto the face frame stile (see Photo 2). Draw these reference marks carefully to ensure that the hinges will line up correctly on the cabinet. For the quality of Garret’s work the thick brass hinges may be the right choice.
Hinges are right- or left-handed, and can have a fixed or removable pin – the latter lets you remove doors without unscrewing the hinges. A hinge back plate prevents damage to the back of the door and adds reinforcement to the door when bolting hinges to it. Once applied, you position your artwork on the board and then cover it with something such as sheet of glass to apply a steady even pressure and let it dry for 4-24 hours. When you are installing European hinges on a face frame cabinet, the mounting plate will be placed on the edge of the frame.
You will make more work for yourself by having to worry about the gate falling, either away from you or towards you as you will end up having to pack and wedge everywhere to stop this. Use plywood to ensure overhang: Move the hinged door to the carcase, and drive the screws to complete the installation. The object should never be adhered directly to the mount nor should it be attached to the back of the window portion of the mat. These are special spring loaded bits that are self-centering in holes on hinges.
Photo corners are a great archival photo mount for picture framing since they allow you to do your photo mounting without any chemicals coming into contact with your picture. Once it is in place lower it onto the board and using clean hands apply pressure to the top of your art where the hinges are. Now simply fold the mat board up and over so that it is positioned right side up on top of the mount board.
If you are fitting the hinge pins directly to brickwork or stonework, then again, you’ll have to adapt this to take into account the different fixings required (we do recommend that you fit to some kind of wooden gate post, however, rather than direct to the brickwork, as this will give a stronger fixing for the hinges.). A baseplate, which is either an integral part of the cup arm or installed separately, attaches to the cabinet carcass or face frame. This has to do with the position of the door in relation to the cabinet opening.
I believe there are better way to show craftsmanship, and expend limited time than mortising overly heavy butt hinges into a frame, just for the sake of doing it. And although I can afford the cost of extruded brass hinges, I don’t find them appropriate or worth the expense. Lift the mat up with the image hanging down, place the mount board or frame backing board behind it, lay your glazing (the glass or acrylic) on top and insert into the picture frame.
