Tiles that suit industrial style were a huge trend at Coverings 2013 that we’ll explore in another ideabook, but in this case the wood planks take on the hues of a concrete floor. Lookalike wood tile caught my eye last year in a restaurant in Canada and I thought it was so cool I got down on my knees to caress that floor, no joke.

These Heartland Light Oak porcelain tiles have a durable glaze that’s suitable for light commercial foot traffic. The first planks I installed were 12 x 18. That means that you can get the look of a costly, exotic wood at a much more reasonable tile price. I’ve seen it installed in restaurants in the Bay Area too which makes sense since it looks like reclaimed or hand scraped wood but has the benefit of repelling moisture while maintaining a great look, even with tons of traffic. More recently, I considered porcelain wood-look tiles, which, purist that I am, I hesitated to embrace. If damage does occur, you can replace a single tile (or multiple tiles) easily without having to rip up a whole section of the floor.

Disney has installed wood-look tile in numerous places throughout the park (most notably in the new Fantasyland expansion) and not only did it look incredible, it easily stands up to hundreds of people walking over it every day. I went into a Fired Earth showroom yesterday and they had wood effect porcelain tiles and I really liked them but ruled them out is they were £100+ p/sqm!! Wood Grain Tile is another option for tiling that offers a lot of design possibilities with a wide range of colors in a spectrum of styles, from rustic to refined. I went back to the store I purchased the tiles and called American oleans, they no longer make this tile and cannot replace the bad ones. All the floors are tiled in 30-inch by 6-inch Italian porcelain planks that resemble wood.

Scott Finley, a sales associate at Big Bob’s Outlet in Overland Park, recalls that about 18 to 24 months ago, shoppers started asking for wood grain tile. While wood can expand or crack in wet environments, tile resists moisture, allowing a wood look on decks, around pools, or in baths or kitchens.

You can use faux wood tile in parts of the home where moisture and water make real wood impractical, such as bathrooms, kitchens and foyers.
