A pigmented stain will also block out the color it is being applied over, but not all of it. In order for the lighter pigmented stain to block out all the darker color there would have to be so much pigment in the stain that it would not only block out the darker color but also hide all the grain of the wood, just like a paint. Asian Paints Melamyne is an acid-cured premium wood finish which happens to be the most commonly applied wood finish in India. Making a sample board could be very beneficial, particularly if you are using a coloured varnish. The stain will be absorbed into these grooves and will highlight their appearance.

Coloured varnishes are not generally considered to be durable enough for a floor although areas with light to moderate foot traffic typically wear well. The amount of emulsion to varnish is very much trial and error but as a guide, do a test by mixing 2 teaspoons of emulsion with approx’ 250ml varnish and apply with a paint pad to a test area. Let the wood dry and then seal the entire surface with three coats of polyurethane.

Wax is another traditional finish for flooring and it both protects and enhances the appearance of the wood. So, when you apply a colored stain, the first thing that happens is that the dye dissolved in the white spirits or alcohol is absorbed into the wood (preferentially into the more porous regions) thereby bringing out the grain of the wood. We regularly meet people who are so fed up with the wooden floor finish that they have used, that as soon as they have applied the last coat of finish they begin thinking about sanding the whole lot back off again to start again. Note; when stripping these objects, should you run into variegated surfaces which look like wood filler, at this point there is nothing you can do but sand the surface to bare wood and restain the piece with Nova 18 Novadye, followed by the application of Nova 17 Novathane. An exterior wood stain is different than an interior wood stain in that it will have some alkyd BINDER added to it. The binder is the component that forms a film in alkyd paints, but without any pigments in the can of stain, the binder will dry clear. Some varnishes have a tendency to yellow the wood and have a high gloss finish.

Apply BOYSEN® Oil Wood Stain direct to bare wood without primers or undercoats either by brush, spray or by dipping in an open trough or tank. We chose varnish because we have the floorboards in the hallway and thought that it would be better for a high traffic area and would involve less maintenance. If your features are already slightly damaged, use a specialist wood filler to fill in any dents before applying your varnish or wood stains. I would recommend using the Manns Pine Wood Stain to get the differing colours/tones that you are looking for. Finney’s Extra Tough Waxed Finish (previously known as Hardwax Varnish) Although classified as a varnish, Finney’s Extra Tough Waxed Finish combines our Extra Tough Floor Varnish with special waxes to give a waxed type finish similar to Hard Wax Oils, but with more protection. I would not use an acrylic varnish as these tend to go a slightly milky colour which would not suit oak. So varnish can be a welcomed addition for helping your wood stand the test of time.

Depending on appearance and usage, you should treat the wood with structure oil 2-30 VK white 40 a few times a year. The truth, however, is that this is a really easy attitude for making a big problem where your varnish is involved. Natural characteristics that occur in wood such as excrescences, colour and structural discrepancies and little black spots can and may occur to some extent.

It usually consists of several coats of wax , shellac , drying oil , lacquer , varnish , or paint , and each coat is typically followed by sanding. The pre-mixed stain varnishes you buy at B&Q and the like I tend to describe as ‘thin paint’ and you’re right in that more than two or three coats will almost completely obliterate the grain. They offer uniform penetration along with a depth and clarity of tone that enhances the natural pattern and character of wood grain. It forms a tough, non-yellowing film that accentuates the natural beauty of your interior wooden furniture. Most liquid chemical and citrus-based gel paint strippers remove varnish and stain.

Wipe off the stain with clean cotton rags in the same order you put it on. The idea is to let it soak into all areas of the wood for about the same amount of time (Photo 5). Wipe with light, even pressure. While choosing a varnished floor, check if it is covered with an ecological varnish based on acrylic resin, or with a traditional solvent-borne one. Scoop some wax out of its container with a soft cloth and rub it evenly into the wood until there are no globules of wax left (image 1). Leave the wax to dry, but not to harden for a few minutes.
