The Society for The Arts & Crafts Movement In Surrey exists to celebrate and foster interest in all forms of art, architecture and design of the Arts & Crafts Era, particularly in Surrey. Art Nouveau was most popular from about 1890-1905, towards the end of the arts and crafts movement. A fireplace was the symbol of family in the Arts and Crafts movement, so most homes feature a dominant fireplace in the living room and a large exterior chimney. This volume gave detailed plans for creating a dining room chair, a library table, and even a simplified Morris chair in the mission style. An important development in this movement was the formation of workshops and guilds that trained artists in many crafts – from pottery to furniture. Arts and Crafts style furniture originally spread across America during the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. To furnish the inn, the shop began producing metalwork, lighting fixtures, picture frames, rugs and furniture. Coleton Fishacre was designed in 1925 as a holiday home in Kingswear, Devon, England, in the Arts and Crafts tradition. These modern craftsmen still adhere to the basic principles embraced by craftsmen of the original Arts and Crafts movement.

Arts and Crafts meant a return to products made by hand, straighter forms, large smooth surfaces and linear shapes started taking place of products overloaded with decorative art. Stickley’s designs were exhibited at the prestigious Grand Rapids and Pan American furniture expositions. The search for nature and an idealist medieval era was no longer a valid approach to living. In addition to his membership in the influential Boston Society of Arts and Crafts, Mercer was well-connected with nearby Arts and Crafts advocates. Mackmurdo had both traveled in Italy with John Ruskin and worked with William Morris.

In the United States, organized efforts to gather artists and Craftsman into societies that would promote the ideals of John Ruskin, William Morris and other European exponents of the art that is life did not occur until then the 1890s. These Arts and Crafts artists and designers helped create an ethos in which many workers guilds rose to prominence. Like other Arts and Crafts designers, Voysey was interested in vernacular traditions.
