Whether you call them fish tanks or aquariums, there’s no questioning their appeal and value. All I can say is that not having rimms on it scares the living daylights out of me. I am going to be moving here in a few years and hopefully wil have a place in which I can setup a large 90-120g tank, but im not sure if I am comfortable with not having rims on it. Granted it would be nice to have a rimmed tank with very small tight silicon seals I am thinking of maybe having the rims custom made of stainless steel, with maybe a minor gold inlay in places.
The general benefits of a sump include increased total water volume, a place to hide almost all equipment (heaters, protein skimmers, all filtration, etc.), a safe place to add supplements (many additives in a reef tank are best well mixed before going in to the main tank), and even a good place to refill during water changes or add top-off water for a saltwater tank.

If you double 2 of these it is 4 times the weight and if you double ALL of them, it is 8 times heavier,….So 200 mm x 200 mm x 200 mm (just under 8 x 8 x 8 inches) weighs 8 kilos or nearly 20 pounds on the old scale…Here is a tank 1 metre long (about 3 feet) by 300 mm (1 foot) by 300 mm and when full of water, it weighs 90 kilograms, about the weight of a large man.

Not good to use, yes it is stronger, but safety glass, laminated glass or Tempered glass all share one major flaw, they shatter into a million pieces, where regular float glass just cracks, the advantage of the glass just cracking is most times you have a chance to save your fish and drain the tank, where the other is flopping fish and water and glass everywhere.
I’m using a glass fish tank right now, the trick is to flip it upside down on top of a plexi glass piece with holes in it, slide the whole thing off the edge of a table so air can enter via buttom holes and then get vynil tubing from bottom hole through aquarium on top of drip shield, forced humid air will create enough air exchange and won’t need to drill holes through the glass, any attempts will probably crack the glass (unless you do it with specialty bit in water).
I have purchased and even built many aquariums over my career (mostly for clients), this includes both glass and acrylic and while I often here that one is better than the other or one is more likely to leak, often what is stated does not mesh with the reality based on the literally over 5000 aquariums I have serviced, fixed, sold, built, etc over the last 35 years.
I have been called out by a client who thought that their tank had a leak on the bottom (which would require a strip down of the tank and stripping of silicone and reapplication), only to find that the aquarium actually was only seeping water from the top (often under the trim) and this small bead of water would run down the side seem in a manner that went unseen.
André Silvestre likes to emphasise this by pointing out that every rock structure has small rocks in the end terminations, some next to the big rocks, others serving as small islands. Real plants are a great choice for your Betta fish because they not only create a natural type of environment for your fish, but they also give additional oxygen to the water. Keep in mind that the worms and the fish death might not be related, but if in doubt, I would treat the aquarium to eliminate all traces.
Keep this in mind when setting up a small tank like this, ammonia will build up quickly and it is best to stay ahead of the game before it can become a problem for your jellyfish. Pick a tank with top open area is more, for easy exchange of oxygen and escape of other gases into outside air. Later I have been told by people in the construction industry that the tank is strong enough to hold poured concrete. If you do want to raise food fish or a local species, be sure to provide adequate water temperature and feed. They range from near UV to very green and this can have a big impact on the look of the tank.
Its worth pointing out at this stage that using 100% pure silicone with no anti fungal or stain chemicals etc in it is a good idea if you intend to use the tank for livestock. Do not get silicone that is rated as mold and mildew resistant, as it contains chemicals that could leach into the water and harm the fish. I have tried everywhere and no one has a replacement center brace for this tank. Here are a few more things to keep in mind so you can make sure your new pet lives a long and healthy life!
After about half an hour, gently release the fish into the tank making sure that they don’t stay in and get stuck in a bag with no water as they may be reluctant to leave the bag at first. Of course fish need a day/night cycle to be healthy, just like people do. But in the wild most tropical fish don’t have a massive light blaring down on them as they do in your tank.
Now work out where you are going to press, make sure you have a even amount of pressure, raise your hands and drop them on the piece hard and fast. I would look at a few of the premium tank manufacturers and see what they do – CADE, Elos, ADA etc. You’ll have to shop around for a source as this is not normally stocked at big box home improvement centers. It also makes maintenance and glass cleaning a breeze and allows a much better water flow around the rocks.
Parasitic or harmful worms will not be visible on the gravel or the glass of the aquarium. We also have an article with some Betta fish facts Hope you’re not left floundering around now that you are more educated on the types of tanks and how to set yours up! The plants readily uptake the nitrate in the water and in consuming it, keep the levels safe for the fish.
NOTE: While we have provided some information about recommended tanks, we are not certified fish experts, so we look to our community to help answer each other’s questions regarding specific fish tank experiences. You will want to have at least a 1:1 ratio of 12″ deep grow bed volume to fish tank volume. The air pump needs to work for the entirety of the tank; not just the area it’s immediately place in. We are happy to advise you on the glass thickness, type of strapping and silicon application. Although this approach to aquascaping a reef tank is the traditional method, it falls very short if one is trying to emulate nature as much as possible.
For larger aquariums with single cracks I recommend adding a plate of glass to the inside of the crack repair in step #2. This plate need only cover the crack plus an inch or two, not the full bottom or side (although that would certainly be better yet). Water change is also vital to replenish electrolytes and other important elements in the water which the fish need for good health.
Note: you do not have to heat your Betta fish tank in order to have a healthy fish. Regardless of the fish you prefer, they’re going to need a specific temperature to thrive in, so it’s vital the water temperature is at a constant level because if the temperature fluctuation is too much the fish will get stressed and become ill. Buying a fish tank for the first time can be a challenge as you’ll be concerned over maintenance, the cost, if it’s the right size, etc.
Even if it is just a 10 gallon sump on a 20 gallon tank it can make all the difference in how well your tank runs in the long term and how easy it is to keep it going that way. Had a Veranda Door, double pan, for no reason fall apart, the glass was 15 years old. It is perfectly possible for a fish that you have kept for years to get ill, even if no external disease has been introduced.
