Fiddes wood oil as with many other solvent based wood preservatives and oils is flammable so should be kept away from children, naked flames, cigarettes and other sources of ignition. This is done in order to open the wood grain, which allows for a better product adherence or penetration. Care should be taken when using wire wool on oak, as any fibres left behind can react with the wood causing staining. The finish can be sprayed onto the wood surface with a pump up sprayer or, an airless sprayer.

Proff Exterior Wood Oil is for finishing of any type of exterior wood – garden furniture, decking boards, fences, and cladding. Feast Watson Wood Shield Oil should be stirred thoroughly before and during application with a flat blade stirrer taking care not to introduce bubbles. Again, you’ll find plenty of products to do the job, but we do recommend using Greensolv Wood Cleaner and Brightener , a very good water based cleaner which contains oxalic acid, the best bleaching agent for wood. One reason that the oil may seem to be the better choice is that many painters feel that it’s resins will penetrate into the wood surface better than the fast drying latex. Traditionalists and woodworking purists will object to epoxy on philosophical grounds, but epoxy is superior to every other kind of finish in strength, resilience, and moisture-resistance.
Make sure your wood is clean as per instructions,it soaks in and enhances the grain slightly. It seems it would get messy if you have to use two types of paint on a single surface. Wood-X wood oils are ‘viscous, mineral-based’ oils designed to penetrate into absorbent, chemical and preservative free exterior timber products such as Western Red Cedar weatherboards, fascia’s, boards, beams and mouldings. To retain the tone of new wood, the best approach is to use a WRP or penetrating oil with UV blockers and a tint added to match the redwood or cedar. Teak , White Oak , Cherry (use water-based varnishes such as Minwax’s Polycrylic to preserve lighter colored woods such as Maple ). Many offer protection equivalent to oil-based varnish (though the finish looks slightly different). Preparation: Before applying Fiddes Exterior High Build Wood Oil, ensure surface is clean, dry and free from any prior finish.
