Calculator converts to/from decimal inches, fractional inches, millimeters. To keep the uniform, light color instead, simply finish Baltic birch with a basic clear top coat of lacquer or polyurethane. I am almost done making a herringbone coffee table with redwood glued down to a MDF base (based on a tutorial I found). They protect the nosing and plywood from the metal clamp faces and help spread the force of the clamps over a wider area. All in all though, very nice piece (I love the floating top and will certainly be trying that in some future projects).
My console table is pretty wide (64 inches), but it’s only 14 inches deep, and it has vertical pieces supporting it all the way around. Cut components with a tablesaw: All base components—legs, aprons, and stretchers—are laminations made from 3-9/16-in.-wide slats of 3/4-in.-thick plywood. I recently bought a home, and there were two of these (or very similar) table bases left in the garage, as well as some plywood. I just looked at both sides and decided I liked the grain on one side better, and designated this my top.
Decorative Laminates such as Sunmica or others (which are actually a blend of paper and plastic) are glued over the plywood surfaces. Or hickory, apple, alder, mahogany, walnut, afromosia… If you’ve heard of a species of wood, chances are you can find it covering a panel of plywood. One of the designers in my book turned a single sheet of plywood into a 40-by-72-inch dining table, and he had enough cutoff material to build up the edges so the tabletop appears to be 1 1/2-inch thick. Since you are in a time crunch this method of doing ply now and then a solid top later may appeal.
Wear and Tear – No matter which plywood sheets you buy, whether pine, birch or oak, or how many protective finishing coats you apply, they are never going to be as durable or as aesthetically perfect as expensive solid or engineered hardwood flooring A DIY plywood floor is specifically suited to those looking for a more rough and ready” finish. As America and the rest of the world continues to move toward sustainable building materials, plywood is certain to stay near the top of stack. The even layering of dark and light wood lends a crisp, linear detail to any project and reminds us that plywood is both a natural and man-made animal.
Roll or brush a thin coat of contact cement on both the plywood and the back of the laminate, making sure no runs or thick splatters form on either surface, as excess glue will cause a dimple or bump on the finished surface. The one problem that you will surely run into, however, is that someone will inevitably push down on the edge of the table and it will flip. I ended up screwing and gluing 2 3/4 sheets of plywood to the top and bought a 3/4 sheet of oak plywood to glue to the top. One bench top is an old bifold hollow core door which just served as a bridge between the table saw and the radial saw.
