How To Use Scrapers

My first experience with cabinet scrapers occurred shortly after hiring into Gougeon Brothers. Once it’s sharp, you’ll take two more short steps to make the scraper into the finest finishing tool you own. Flexing the scraper allows you to selectively remove material, such as epoxy drips or areas of raised wood grain, on projects that have been coated with epoxy. For those how are tight on space and budget, the StavePress Bow Vise holds wood firmly and gently, preserving the integrity of the wood grain as you work your stave. Card scrapers are most suitable for working with hardwoods, and can be used instead of sandpaper.

The thickness matters more – most scrapers are used by pushing – and you center your thumbs on the card to get a _slight_ curve to the scraper. Card scrapers clean up a workpiece like no other tool, leaving a scratch-free, glassy-smooth surface ready for finishing. It won’t lift the grain of the wood and, while it performs something of the same function as sandpaper, its waste products are small shavings rather than dust. The StavePress will conform to the shape of your work piece, hold it firmly, and will not crush the wood fibers.wood scrapers tool

But a beading tool is not only useful for all those jobs that a router cannot do; it is better than a router for many simple jobs such as putting a cock bead on a stile or along the edge of a bookshelf. And there are certain lutherie applications where hand scrapers are the traditional and still preferred tool for final wood smoothing. Farrier’s Rasp (above left) is larger in size to get work done faster, while Dean Torge’s Rasp (above right) is slimmer and dual handled for more controlled stock removal of wood from your bow stave. The Sorby box wood handled cabinetmaker’s chisels are very nice, light, well shaped blades with fairly good quality steel.

Tools are supplied with lacquered polished finish & fitted with ergonomically designed seasoned hard wood handles duly lacquered polished. Holding it between two pieces of flat wood close to the edge may help to prevent it from flexing. In addition, we build one-of-a-kind, Heavy Duty, Custom Hand Scrapers with a Lifetime Warranty. Its design will let you know if you’re getting too aggressive with it. It’s definitely another tool that once you use it, you won’t want to be without it. Cheap gauges can be found in second hand tool shops and brought up to required spec.

This burr will slice the fibers of the wood like a tiny plane, with the face of the scraper acting as a chip breaker to eliminate tearout. GROSSLY simplified, sandpaper works by grinding down high spots on a surface, using its grits to scratch and break the wood fibers. Most are the work of anonymous modern stone knappers seeking to imitate prehistoric tool types.

I guess you could say that we have had a fixation on cabinet scrapers, since we have done substantial experimentation on the hardness of the scrapers and on a variety of thicknesses as well. Our advice is impartial, we are not linked financially in any way with any tool manufacturing organisation and we receive no free samples that may blur our judgement or colour our opinion. The sharpening process, during which the burr is rolled over to form the edge, is trickier even than using the tool once it’s been sharpened. Now there are literally hundreds of thousands of people making their own bows from wood.

N the cutting edge plays a major role in determining how the tool will behave in a cut, but you cannot see the burr without some sort of magnification. If you are using a rectangular scraper, bow the scraper very slightly to prevent the edges from digging in (curved scrapers are not normally bowed, since bowing would change the shape of the curve). They’ll peel fine delicate shavings of wood from your bow as you work it. Once you get your cabinet scraper properly burred” it is a joy to use and it’ll become your go-to” tool for working down the belly during the tillering process. Scrapers are a good deal more intriguing and useful than they may at first appear.

Each prepared edge of the scraper should be good for 10-30 passes (depending on the size of the surface and the wood) before it needs to be reburnished. This is the primary tool for spindle turners to convert square turning blanks into round cylinders. You can sharpen triangular scrapers the same way, but for an end scraper take care to grind a smooth curve. You can still get a good cut in soft wood but you are more likely to get a fuzzy finish if the blade is not well honed. Another tool from the scraper family is the Mystic Scraper from Bernie Swank of Mystik Longbows.
