The Arts and Crafts movement was a social/artistic movement of modern art , which began in Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century and continued into the twentieth, spreading to continental Europe and the USA. Those who worked in factories were often producing fancy, elaborate but poorly made Victorian furniture – as was the style. Webb rejected the grand classical style and instead found inspiration in British vernacular architecture. They include St Martin’s House, whose style was inspired by the philosophy of arts and crafts movement and The Red House. Crafters furniture tended to be more massive and heavy than the other mission producers, and it displayed a distinctively European, masculine look.
Arts and Crafts architectural guidelines – use of the vernacular, local materials and craft traditions – also flourished in America, encouraging a variety of regional domestic architecture. Unlike in England, the undercurrent of socialism of the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States did not spread much beyond the formation of a few Utopian communities.
