A new concrete slab is a huge consideration with regards installing a wood floor. If not, you can clean the floor to remove all contamination (hot wash with detergent, and then thoroughly rinse), then repair any defects with Ultra BondAcryl Primer and Mortar. The paint needs to be liquid water” closed and vapor water” open – hygrophobic and vapor permeable – that would be typical acrylic latex paint formulated for concrete substrates.
In the cradle-to-grave comparison, the wood floor system measured negative global warming carbon emissions compared to the concrete, with a difference of 18,822 kg of CO2 (the equivalent to annual emissions from 3.7 passenger vehicles), or nearly 180 percent, and significantly less consumption of both total energy and fossil fuel energy. On the other hand, concrete slab poured on clay or unstable soil means you’ll make up the difference in cost by repeated repairs to cracked concrete and ruptured pipes. When a cement slab is located at ground level (at grade), you don’t usually run into problems with moisture, once the slab has cured properly, and can easily glue this type of wood flooring directly onto the concrete. Typically just occasional sweeping and damp mopping will keep the floor looking like new for many years. Professional installers use a moisture meter and other methods to test the body and the surface of the slab for excessive moisture. That’s why experienced builders pay close attention to minimizing expansion and contraction when preparing to install this traditional material, especially in concrete slab construction.
Relative humidity probes placed close to mid-depth actually measure the relative humidity within the slab and are less sensitive to short-term fluctuations in ambient air humidity and temperature above the slab. If some rooms, but not all, will have a floor covering, then those rooms should have a separate tubing loop to make the system heat these spaces more efficiently. Although laminate flooring’s wear surface is highly stain, scratch and moisture resistant which lends itself better to people with dogs.
Be sure to get the manufacturer’s installation procedures for going over an existing vinyl floor and be sure to check if this type installation is warranted by the manufacturer. Engineered hardwood is sturdier than traditional plank – but surface preparation still matters. A floating floor will be basically a hardwood floor that is installed by gluing the floor planks together as an alternative to gluing or stapling them to the subfloor itself. Also, touching up scratches and marks in a hardwood floor is possible but not a laminate floor. My shop is a 1929 garage built to accomodate a model A. The floor is concrete, somewhat the worse for a neighbor’s pecan tree. This involves opening and testing several bundles to ensure the wood flooring is the same MC throughout, and is compatible with the subfloor which the flooring will cover when installed. Now we have new products and materials made specifically for installing flooring over concrete and preventing mould, like Amdry Insulated Subfloors. The next best choice for this application is the laminated or engineered plank floor.
Use a cleaner or special floor wipes designed for engineered wood flooring to immediately remove any glue that may have squeezed through the boards. Considering we do not recommend installing PEX tubing in the floor joist cavities, this is where Warmboard is an excellent solution. Such measurements can be very useful to determine whether a floor is getting wetter or drier, and to predict how long it might take to reach an acceptable level of moisture. It is better that the wood be allowed to breathe and reach a normal room moisture level.
This information permits the user to make a more informed decision regarding the installation of floor coverings or the need to consider other alternatives. A raised wood floor system can be a cost-competitive alternative to a concrete slab system – especially when bringing in dirt to elevate a structure is necessary. When you reach the end of the floor, stop and leave enough space to comfortably exit the room without stepping on the new floor.
I laid down a plastic dimple membrane designed for use under floating floors, firm so as not to crush under load, about 3/8” thick, dimpled to allow air movement around under the floor but prevent condensation from entering the plywood. In other words, RH probes are less sensitive to changes in ambient air humidity and temperature above the slab than calcium chloride testing. As durability is the key selling feature for most consumers, being familiar with the Janka Hardness Ratings will assist communication with an engineered hardwood consultant or hardwood consultant. Stagger the boards at least 6 inches from each end to add strength to the floor.

Depending on the manufacturer’s given wear layer thickness, you can also sand and refinish floating engineered floors 1 to 5 times, professionally, over the life time of the floor. Concrete slabs, wood subfloors, and the wood flooring placed above a slab or subfloor are by their very nature porous. Concrete slabs are also the most efficient for hydronic radiant heating systems, as the thermal mass of the slab helps hold heat.
Most engineered wood species are suitable to be put in areas that may be subject to excess moisture as the lacquer finish will protect the boards but it is not recommended to use solid wood flooring in areas where there is high humidity or excessive moisture. Don’t let anyone convince you that squeaking can be solved by nailing or glueing a new floor on top.

Chair pads should be used to prevent scratching and regular dust-mopping or sweeping to remove any grit or dirt from the floor.
There are houses in my area that were built this way for a very short time in the early 60’s late 50s when they went from pier and beam to slab foundations. If you are concerned about that some time you may need to repair the flooring and want to refinish the floor than your best option is hardwood flooring. The sleeper system that entailed fastening 2′ X 4’s to the concrete laid on their side has faded from use.
