I purchased my first Larch Wood cutting board 10 years ago and it has always held an important place in my kitchen so it was a natural choice to use the same boards when we began hosting cooking classes. So we removed the sinks and worked on applying the wood sealer—a process which took six whole days, because of drying time between coats. Also, most butcher block” countertops are manufactured with this method (with some notable exceptions). Blended grain butcher block is constructed by gluing many pieces of random lengths of finger-jointed interior rails together.
To join the corners, we used these handy little tools called tite joint fasteners They need to be recessed into the wood; then you slip them into the space and use a little metal tool to twist the ball and tighten the joint. Edge-grain construction provides a striping effect showing mostly vertical (straight) grain lines and brings out the variation of color in a wood. Pour undiluted lemon juice on areas of your butcher block that contain tough stains to remove them completely. Make sure to ask the seller about the wood, and whether it is an end-grain or edge-grain block.
This helps to keep moisture, bacteria, and other contaminants from getting into the wood surface. Butcher block counter tops are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. Available in end grain & long grain, and a variety of thicknesses, wood species, and finishes, butcher block countertops can be custom cut to your specifications. This versatile board will become a staple in your kitchen for daily use, but is also suitable for serving that beautiful roast. Some woods, like walnut , come in a range of colors and can be used to create a contrasting, rustic-style butcher block countertop. A good butchers block should be able to resist bacteria and last for a long time.
Instead, use a thin, flexible cutting mat that can be placed on top of your cutting board whenever you’re handling raw meat. It will also give a wood surface a nice smooth feel to the touch and leave a gentle, sweet fragrance. If you don’t get it lined up perfectly, you’re in for lots of sanding to smooth out the bump on the right side of the counter. As a last resort, mix equal parts water and bleach and apply to the block using a sponge or rag.
You can make your board as thick as you want to. I bought 1×2 boards (actual75″x1.5″) so that I didn’t have to cut them down. You should never cut directly on a varnished butcher block as it will scratch the surface causing exposed wood to become vulnerable to further damage. Food-grade mineral oil should be applied to the wood on a weekly basis to protect it from daily use. Admittedly I have only done this when renovating floors, but I am sure it would work on counter tops too.
