It was too painful to keep going – Part 1
Motivation.
Ever want something so bad enough that, even if there’s no real signs for direction, you’re desperate enough to create them? Not safe, no guarantees – but the thought of living one more day in your current position is less desirable than your next root canal…it’s what motivates us to find a solution – a better way.
The greatest things can shift when we’re pushed to a desperate point of motivation.
That’s where it all starts – I’m sure your story can relate to this one.
Let’s start at the beginning. Creativity and Art being huge motivation, it has always been present, even in early years. My first real step into the “professional” world followed graduation from the Art Institute of Phoenix for Computer Animation. It was a fast paced expensive education of condensed everything. During those last months of finalizing your portfolio, long, long hours in the computer lab are a must – you’re absolutely “fried” mentally and physically by the time you’re done. 24 months of blood, sweat and tears get packaged on a 2 minute demo reel of your talent and motivation; your pride and joy. You can imagine what it was like to get a call from 20 Century Fox Animation Studios not long after – the only motion picture film studio in town. Cloud 9 ensued, I was hired as a production assistant with the chance to prove myself, work well with the studio in hopes of promotion. PA’s are the bottom rung – majority coming out of school start at these positions.
Doing my part to show my work ethic, work motivation – additional hours (17-20) were spent working on various 3d elements for the film, Titan A.E down the in the 3D department. Sweat Equity here, not paid. Gotta pay your dues! Even when dancing with your head in the clouds, smiling at everything. Here were my hours:
Monday 9-6pm, 6-9pm-3D
Tuesday 9-6pm 6-9pm-3D
Wednesday 7-9am-3D, 9-6pm
Thursday 9-6pm, 6-9pm-3D
Friday 7-9am-3D, 9-6pm, 6-9pm-3D
*This schedule bout’ killed me due to the Fibromyalgia. Long hours locked at a computer without frequent breaks are stiff and painful. But we’re willing to sacrifice, right?
I’m certain you’ve felt this motivation….there’s always a “fight” left in you for that silver lining ahead…the storm will pass and for the moment you’ll do whatever it takes just to endure….
Yes I worked in the film industry. Yes I was working directly in the field I went to school for. Opportunities were limitless.
But let’s have the realty check for a moment:
What I had:
Some prestige
Work ethic
Popularity
Artistic Contribution
What I did NOT have:
Money
Time
Freedom
Control
Tune in tomorrow to see how I finally broke FREE from my storm.
