A good friend of ours recently asked me to make her a headboard that used the herringbone pattern, which I’ve used in lots of trays that I’ve made. For added stability, nail a third, centered gusset on the backside of the headboard. You will obviously have to make the bed frame bigger than the actual mattress size. A friend of mine once left her mattress on the bare floor because she couldn’t decide on what kind of bed she wanted. Instead of heading out to the furniture store to buy a new headboard, you can make one yourself.
Anything can turn into a headboard: a picket fence, garden gate, scrap wood, shelves, chair backs, even thick twigs/branches for a country cottage look. This DIY headboard is lovely with buttons to match the fabric cover but what makes it really special are the two sides that turn into the bed just a tad. Finally I decided to make a DIY bed frame, and went back and forth, even on building day, on whether to orient the beadboard” horizontally or vertically—both looked amazing. If you take a look at the plans, there is a plywood cut layout diagram on page 2. You cut part of the headboard out of 1 sheet of plywood and the rest (headboard, footboard, side panels) out of the other sheet. Other DIY furniture pieces to compliment the platform bed design can also be easily created with these DIY plans. I did use 1×4 for the supports on the footboard since it wasn’t as large as the headboard.

I would love to make this for my room, and I’m going to purchase a queen size bed soon, so as far as measurements I’m clueless! In a room where the only place for built-in wardrobes is behind the bed, this headboard doubles as a low room divider and makes the seemingly impossible suddenly an option. P.S. An increasingly popular trend, repurposing leftover wooden pallets for constructing a useful accompaniment for the bed is a quick décor makeover. I really appreciate that you just jump in and try and in doing so, make gorgeous things for your home. I would be sure to still create a frame around the pegboard with 2×4″ wood, and a supportive strip of wood down the middle too. My Sweety and I (mostly him) do some diy around the house.. I found this post a few months ago and lost the site when my pc got wiped clean…we plan to build my niece and maybe sister a bed to help save on the cost of a bed rm set. I’d happily make another one, and take with me all the little lessons I learned along the way. Ah yes, I did too, the first time I tufted (this headboard), you’ll notice two of my diamonds on the end didn’t end up with a pleat. After all the holes have been created in the foam, you will wrap the entire front of the frame with batting. Tufted headboards add marvelous texture and look, especially if the fabric you’re using on the headboard is monochrome.
The headboard support is the easiest – just drill your pocket holes with your Kreg Jig Jr into each end of the piece of plywood and attach with screws to two of the leg posts. If you want to attach the platform to the wall, you can totally do that, just use longer screws and L brackets on the underside and make sure you hit a stud. I personally have no need for a headboard right now but if my dream of owning and running a B&B comes true I will! I think the deeper the tuft the more beautiful the headboard is, so if I saw that at my Walmart when I was looking, I probably would have sprung a few extra dollars for the extra fluff!! Make sure it’s still straight along the lines you drew and repeat the pilot hole and clearance hole process. Just to give the back a clean look, I covered the back of the frame with some left over drop cloth fabric that I had from another project. We placed drywall screws (1″ – 1.25″) from behind the headboard just so that the front would be as is and the screws would not be seen. All you need is some plywood, your fabric of choice and some rather large buttons to match. You will need to saw the door down to the size you need and then add some chair rail molding and a little paint and you end up with a beautiful wooden headboard that is completely customizable.

Hey, i made king size bed but its measure at 77….i used queen size egg crate and it fit perfect with little trim on bottom, if its too small you can put half and half on one but be sure to cover maybe quilt batting cover so the line” won’t be noticeable…im not finish with mine, i did math wrong and I’m short by 9 buttons so I’m hoping to finish in a day or two….im so exciting.
