This is a chicken run / rabbit run we first built about 6 years ago, and revisited 4 years age to convert to a house and run hence the variations in colour between the different parts. Rabbits soiled with droppings or urine are at high risk from this condition – flies lay their eggs on any area of the rabbit that is wet or dirty (especially around the genital area) and the resulting maggots eat into its flesh with very distressing and often fatal consequences. A good rule of thumb for hutch size: Does raising a litter need about the same square footage as their weight. Without question, a rex rabbit should never be kept on a wire mesh floor, and that is also true of runs with wire mesh bases, as this will inevitably cause problems with the feet. If your rabbit lives outside it is important to consider its welfare through the winter.
In the summer months some rabbits get too hot, and shovel out all the bedding from the hutch into the run so they can lie on the bare wood. One thing I would suggest is to make a mesh top to the run to protect from passing cats and have a section covered as protection from the sun or showers. Do not let your rabbit play on grass that has been fertilized or had a weed killer put on it. Always supervise your rabbit while it is outside, it takes just a few seconds for a dog to kill or frighten your rabbit to death.
This means that in most cases a rabbit will chew and destroy furniture, wallpaper, cables, carpets etc. By making everyone aware of where not to go, enough people will get the message and stop buying them. Even in a secure hutch, a rabbit can be frightened to death by a predator attempting to get in. He lives at the end of the garden, alone, so he isn’t neutered and lives in a hutch that is typically available in many pet shops. Over 90% of pet shops on the high street and online are still selling rabbit houses that are tiny little hutches no bigger than the crates you saw in the old Victorian paintings. Contact us and we can arrange a bunny date for your rabbit to meet one of our lovely singles!
I empty these every few weeks into the compost pile or around our orchard trees or wherever it’s needed in the garden (rabbit manure is a cold manure and can be used fresh, without composting). They are 7ft long x 3ft wide and 3ft high (which exceeds the standards of the Rabbit Welfare Association), with a sloping felted roof. Further development of the Rex rabbit resulted in the somewhat rare Astrex, Opossum, and the Velveteen lop (11, 12, 13).
This story touched the hearts of many children and is still enjoyed today, so when the Rex breed became a reality, some rabbit breeders decided to try and actually create such a breed, and settled on the Velveteen lop! If you have more than one rabbit living in the area where the babies are, see the article Mum bunny has company” on the website for information on what you need to be aware of. I wanted a run that could contain the hutch so I can leave them ‘free range’ as much as possible and don’t need to lift them in and out all the time. There are a few factors you must consider when purchasing a litter as some may not be suitable for your rabbit.
The following tips aim to provide a series of best-practices for ensuring that your plugin can safely co-exist with Rabbit. Of course any of these options can be combined; i.e. a hutch and run with Runaround attachments or converted playhouse can be further extended by Runaround or connected hutches/runs as and when you wish to (or can afford to!). Trees, plants and shrubs provide shade during sunny days and cover from the wind and rain, but certain types of trees and plants can repel those nasty creepy crawlies that rabbits and rabbit owners find so offensive. So the 2 1/2-by-3-foot wire hutch described in this article would be sufficient for a 7 1/2-pound doe.
Fill the bowl with warm water to a depth of about 4-6 inches (10-15cms) depending on the size of the rabbit. I’m currently doing a campaign to expose the companies that continue to sell tiny rabbit hutches despite being told the guidelines. Hutches need to be at least 6ft by 3ft by3ft and if they do not have the run of the house then they will need an exercise area of 8ft by 4ft by 3ft. Water / feeders can be as simple as a old tuna cans wired to the side of the hutch or you can buy commercial quality equipment. You can build some really cool cages for rabbits and other small animals using these cool cubes and some cable ties.
This spacious rabbit run can be extended in numerous ways to give your pet bunnies an even larger area to hop around in. You can choose to buy a rabbit run as large as you like immediately, or extend it over the years. If a rabbit hangs on for too long before urinating on a regular basis, this will cause the urine to become more concentrated which could in itself cause problems. The Lo-Rise version of this outdoor rabbit enclosure still has a large door which is easy to reach through and top up your bunny’s hay rack and water bottle.
The actual amount an individual rabbit will drink on a daily basis depends on various factors such as weather conditions, temperature, diet, social grouping, accommodation, activity levels, and general health and hormonal status. Keep in mind the proper dimensions you will need for a comfortable-sized enclosure for your rabbit. Use an x-pen to confine a free-roaming rabbit when you’re out of the house, cleaning, or the door is open. You need to make sure that all parts of your rabbit habitat is secure, so choose something with strong wire mesh and bolt-operated locks – don’t rely on turnpin fastenings.
This isn’t recommended if your rabbit is a big chewer though, and don’t let them have the bottles if they start chewing on the plastic. This was a 6×9′, 6′ high run with apex roof with a 6×9′ 5’6″ mesh roof run attached to giving a total of 6×18′. Try to site your shed or hutch in a shaded area, but if none is available, think about planting rabbit-safe shrubs or climbers to provide shade once they grow. Yesterday’s News is a recycled paper pellet litter that absorbs the smell of rabbit urine.
If you are adopting a rabbit for a child you must realize that your child will not be the primary caretaker but you will. Super easy to build out of very common materials, most of which you may have around your house. Makes me want to run out and get a bunny just so I can start making him toys 🙂 Totally awesome! Binkys are high in the air, twisty jumps that a rabbit does to let off excitement. When our oldest bunny passed away at nearly seven, we wanted to adopt an older rabbit that needed a home. To help you, we have selected a few videos for you to see various rabbit hutches.
This behaviour is often accompanied with the carrying of hay in the mouth to add to the nest, and some females go to such an extreme that they will strip the whole hutch of bedding, and pile it up in their chosen spot. The idea here is to make one shelf of 3 panels by 1 panel, 6 squares up, and another shelf 2 panels by 1 panel, 12 squares up. This should work well for bunnies less than 7 lbs.
The reason for the towel underneath the bowl is two-fold – to stop the bowl moving around and to catch any overflow if the rabbit tries to get out! So still using the existing hutch and run, this has really improved Dexter’s environment and he’s nearly ready to meet Sookie. Alternatively if your run is designed for the hutch to stand in side, that run can simply be lifted off and moved to a grassy area on days where your bunnies activities can be supervised!
Keep the litter box clean – the cleaner you keep the cage and litter box the more likely it is that your rabbit will use it. Put the rabbit in a closed-off room when there are lots of playmates or parties. Run one end of the zip tie around the metal where the shelf connects, then zip tight. They enjoy the freedom of exploring at a leisurely pace or taking a top speed run whenever they choose to. We provide cardboard castles for them if they feel the need to get away for a while.
Another way to use rabbit hutches with runs in your garden is to let your rabbits eat the leftovers after your seasonal harvest. Or add bits of wood to create a step effect and allow your rabbit to have more grip on the ramp. Once the rabbit is stable on the new regime (this may take up to a month) you can then try to introduce some celery. Although I am not in favour of these blocks in general, in cases such they can be very helpful in persuading the rabbit to turn his or her attention towards the blocks when the urge to groom excessively occurs.
Besides the damage a rabbit can do to a wooden hutch, consider that wooden frames get soaked with urine and become a breeding ground for parasites and disease. It is something that all rabbits will do. Just because a rabbit has never chewed cords before does not mean that one day he will not decide to do it. It is universal amongst rabbits to love chomping them.
As the hutch and run are permanently sited there are paving stones around the outside to prevent the rabbits from digging out, and any predators from digging in, but the middle section is turf so that they have a soft surface. Fluids need to be given if the rabbit is dehydrated, but usually this needs to be done by the vet as the saline needs to be injected subcutaneously or given as a drip. Take one of the side supports and hold it in place against the legs on the right side of the hutch.
Large mesh doors can be partially covered with clear perspex or plastic, allowing your rabbit to see out and the sun to come in but preventing wind and rain. Neutered rabbits will respond better to litter training so consider having your rabbit neutered before bringing them indoors. Treated lumber will hold up better against the elements but use non-toxic or non treated lumber if the rabbit(s) can come in contact with it. Treated lumber can kill a rabbit if it chews on it and it will.
If they are having a very heavy moult, a double bladed cat comb is useful to remove the dead fur in their coats, and this is an important task to do as although consuming fur is not thought to be the main cause of gut stasis (covered separately), it certainly may be a trigger in a rabbit prone to this often fatal condition. This is a matrix system with a mix of tunnels, runs and cubes, with a 6ft hutch as a base.
