I’ve spray painted just about everything: plastic, glass, wood, fiberglass, mirror, metal, ribbon, laminate, etcetera. It generally dries faster and doesn’t require clean-up since no paint brushes are involved. The cold air will not only effect the spray, but the way the paint dries and cures. Whether you’re turning a ladder-back chair into a flower planter or want to put your favorite wooden rocker on the porch, here are some tips on how to get the most life out of wood furniture in the garden.

If you sand first, spray on a 75 degree day with low humidity and use light coats you will have success. Hotter, drier air temperatures will condition the wood quickly, but wet weather will prolong the process.

It may seem like a fast solution and a good idea to use a high-pressure cleaner for the wooden deck, but on wood it will do more harm than good. If the old finish is in bad condition, you may choose to remove all the old finish down to the bare wood. To me, it’s not necessarily a problem with paint coverage, but a weird thing that happens with the finish.

There’s probably an old dresser, chair, or table you’ve sequestered in a dark corner of your basement or attic that’s covered with cracked and blistered paint. We recommend using Benjamin Moore’s ARBORCOAT® Solid Deck & Siding Stain (640) , which is available in any of our thousands of colors and is especially formulated to protect against weather and temperature extremes as well as UV rays. I know it’s outdoor furniture, but after your stain is dry you can add a couple of thin coats of clear to help seal it, and make it last longer as well. Sometimes, if you are sure you are dealing with a rattan reed wicker piece, (rather than the paper wicker) the flaking paint can also be removed at a high-pressure car wash where you spray the piece yourself.
