Many a prospective carver has fallen by the wayside as the result of dull edges and the inability to sharpen them. Outside and internal bevels and the angle of the cutting edge relative to the tool’s shank all have a vital bearing on how well the tool will behave in wood. The next best thing is to use the edge for it’s intended purpose – cutting wood. To be safe you should wear a Kevlar type glove on your non knife hand and a leather thumb guard or similar protection on your knife hand thumb. Gouges with convex (left) and concave (center) edges will give you fits when carving. Don’t waste your money buying tools just to collect them or because you might need them in the future.

If you are seeing white streaks in the cut or the tool requires considerable force to cut the wood. I like it, but it only works well with my folding knife with a /\ point, but not my one with the \ blade. The sharp edge must be formed on the proper grind or bevel or you won’t be carving any wood. When you look through some catalogues for knives some will say honing required some may say pre-sharpened ready for use. A steel or ceramic edge doesnt sharpen, it just re forms the microscopic edge burr on good steel alloys..and will not need to be re honed on a stone for a long time if used , and stored well. After basic sharpening, this is an advanced sharpening process done with an extremely fine sharpening stone. This is because you use it mostly for cutting string, boxes, and so on. But a carving knife should have, except for special, conditions, a longer bevel. The 120 Slojd knife has its center of gravity as close as possible to the middle of your palm, giving maximum dexterity and control. Most hunting or utility knives are ground to an edge bevel of about 20 degrees.
Carving chisels (as opposed to bevel edge chisels) are sharpened on both sides on the belt sander. I’ve seen people make their own handles for the knives blades and gouges as a cost saving measure and to save time not having to switch blades. After many sessions of carving/stropping, carving/ stropping, the edge may become slightly rounded (more from using leather than from using wood strops) – now is the time to hone.
