The only problem I had was that the arm wouldn’t line up with the table properly, and I had to adjust the index head at the back of the arm. I bought the accessory drill chuck for the saw too, can use it as a drill press or router, got the sanding disk also.
According to the info I got from another forum (woodworking), this is about 95% sure, and the parts I saw at the sears site showed that the bearings and other things are identical for most of the different look-alke units. The safety commission advises consumers to stop using their Craftsman radial arm saws immediately and call Emerson at (800) 511-2628 or visit its Web site at to determine whether a saw is recalled, or to ensure they have proper instructions for safe use.
Uh oh, for some reason, unknown, the previous owner somehow lost or failed to install several essential parts, necessary to the correct operation of this saw. Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using these radial arm saws and contact Ryobi customer service to arrange to return part of the saw for a payment of $75. Actually, every one of the Craftsman RAS saws I’ve looked at had current relays vs. centrifugal switches (about 15 or so).
When working on the tree house in the back yard, the Sears radial arm saw requires less clearance for large pieces of wood that need cut, making it a great space saver in the garage. I picked up one of these vintage RASs (Sears Craftsman 10″ manufactured in 1968) earlier this year from a guy who swore by making the table from white melamine laminate.
Consumers must contact Emerson to receive a free repair kit or to return their saw carriage/motor assembly. The mitering feature on the saw works great for small wood projects, such as making wooden picture frames, or the tiny detailed molding on a doll house for your daughter. I made this discovery when I replaced my cutting table top in the middle of a project and saw the marked reduction in splintering. This past summer I bought the same model from a friend who had inherited one from an uncle.
For anyone who owns a Craftsman® 8-inch, 8¼-inch, 9-inch, and 10-inch Radial Arm that cannot be retrofitted, ETC will provide $100 for the return of the radial arm saw carriage/motor assembly. I have a friend who picked up an early 80’s model at a garage sale for $50, he ran home called the 800 number and got a new guard and table for it. Nice move. Sears is a well-known and respected tool brand, and radial arm saws are extremely versatile, making them ideal to have in any garage. We only used the saw a couple of times for actual projects but each time she performed flawlessly.
Another difference in the way I use the saw is that except on long pieces, I rarely change the angle of cut. This option is valuable if you expect to revisit Sears PartsDirect using this computer and browser in the future. I still need to check out all the other necessary components, clean and lubricate the entire saw. If that is the case, the bevel adjustment will be just about impossible to achieve, as the movement is really up on those bearings that hold the yoke to the arm tracks. Even thought the manual for my Craftsman radial arm saw has the owner moving the arm in order to square the cut line with the fence, it is maddeningly imprecise.
Consumers should stop using their Craftsman radial arm saws immediately and contact Emerson Tool Co. at: (800) 511-2628 or visit the firm’s Web site for further information. Happened on my old saw with an aftermarket replacement motor mid-production run last summer. The rest was easy as the saw itself was tracking true without heeling and the arm was perfectly parallel to the table throughout the travel of the motor. If the saw is not retrofitable (certain 10-inch and all 8-inch, 8¼-inch and 9-inch Saws), the owner must return the radial arm saw carriage/motor assembly to Emerson to receive the $100.
