One of the most important parts of any buildings structure is its floor system. Before beginning your floating hardwood floor installation decide if you want an underlayment (made of foam, plastic, or cork) to help insulate noise transmission. Yet, the ply is so stiff it is strong enough not to flex one bit within the short span between the joists. I would love to put in the flooring then add some bright area rug because it is so small!
When you are happy that the compound is smooth and contains no bubbles, pour it onto the floor and allow it to settle to its own level. There are some products mentioned here and probably many others but I would advise against plywood for what you’re considering. If you just want a more uniform color, I’d install them first, then whitewash or stain, then clear. Inspect the sub-floor fasteners to ensure that the paneling is adequately secured to the joists.
The concrete pad is already raised 4″ from the ground, so adding another 2 1/2″ is going to make it interesting when you open the door. Most solid wood flooring installation failures over a concrete slab will probably be from excessive moisture present in the room and this will not be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. If the house is out of square, it will make it exceedingly difficult to get the plywood straight on the joists. The staples need to be long enough to go through the flooring and into the OSB.
If you’re planning to try making these floors for yourself, I’d recommend cutting them outside or in a shop if your house isn’t a giant construction zone already like ours was. We plan to replace the carpet in our new house with wood flooring so this is perfect. I’m considering laying vertical bamboo floors and was wondering if the glue down method would be appropriate or do I have to lay plywood subfloors and nail it down. If the problem has to do with the subfloor — either it’s not plywood or not properly secured to the floor joists with glue and screws — the best option is ripping up the finished floor and making the appropriate repairs. The paint has worn away a bit where my stools sit and scrape the floor all day but the veneer of the plywood beneath the missing paint is still in great shape. It’s almost always a good idea to mark your linoleum floor pieces about an inch or two wider than they need to be. While it’s fairly easy to trim the edges of the linoleum to make it fit your floor space, there’s no way to make a piece of linoleum that’s too small bigger, so be conservative when cutting your linoleum.
I’m only asking because if you’re planning on laying the wood floor on top of what is presently there, then you may run into problems that having two different heights will create. With this method you must make sure that you screw to the joists as well as the floorboards. The best thing a about doing your floors like this is that down the road if you want to upgrade and install hardwood floors you don’t need to pull up anything – you can install them right on top. If there was a convenient notch cut out for pipes he would lay cable in there, sharing with pipework. Concrete slabs, whether new or existing, must be dry before the subfloor is installed.
You didn’t mention whether you installed a layer of 1/2″ cement backer borad on top of your plywood subfloor. The living room floor which we put down in full sheets has shown some scratches, not from our dogs or toddler, but from moving some furniture. Or would it be better and removing all of the parquet laying a new floor on top of the 1/2 Plywood..which still leaves a bump. If quarry tiles are being laid onto concrete or screed, the adhesive will take up the depressions etc. Laid tiles have to be stepped over to lay other tiles, and all of the tiles have to be stepped on to make the cuts.
Sheet Vinyl: Because Vinyl sheet flooring is a thin flexible material, the outline of the ceramic tiles will telegraph through and be visibly seen. Once the grout has hardened, the tiles will be left with a slight haze on them. We had to replace a lot of water damaged drywall & paneling, install board & batten on our ceilings, gut the kitchen & bathroom, & work on some other big, messy projects like that before moving on to the floors. If you find fasteners sticking up above the panel surface, take the time to ensure they are flush with the surface of the sub-floor panels Inspect from below for any shiners (fasteners that have missed joists) and replace them. Also, if the attic insulation is thicker than your ceiling joists, you can raise the height of the joists to above the insulation by attaching 2×3’s to their top edge before you attach the floor boards. I’d lay 30# felt roofing paper under to act as an underlayment for moisture resistance and allow for some movement. It’s not advisable to use treated plywood indoors, however, due to suspected health risks associated with release of toxic gases from the chemicals used to treat the plywood. The real nails are in large part just for the look and to set the floor in place while the glue dries.
The real danger I see is in the floor collapsing prematurely with firefighting personnel going into the building… Covering with drywall probably gets you most of the way to a solution, especially with smoke detectors… but if it were in my house, particularly if it were in a first floor with an unfinished basement, I’d op for the sprinklers. Set out the room, apply the adhesive and lay the tiles, cutting around anything that stands in the way!
