Bleaching oils solve this problem by combining a lightly pigmented semitransparent stain with a bleaching agent. Pure (Clear) color is a pigment-free, clear Monocoat Natural Oil Finish which provides all the characteristics of Monocoat. In latex, it sells Fresh Start All Purpose 100% Acrylic Primer 023, and Moorcraft Super Spec Latex Exterior Primer 169. For the best results, surfaces should be clean, dry and free from any previous wood finishes, this can normally be achieved by a light sanding with a 120 grit sanding paper. TSS MouldPreventer should be left for 24 hours before applying Nature’s Timber Oil.
My theory as to why this is the case is that Padauk’s colors (as well as many other exotics) are very much soluble in alcohol, and the solvent present in the shellac may actually be pulling some of the wood’s natural colors out of the wood surface and locking them into the lac resin. Before giving a new look to these spaces, one first needs to either remove the previous finish or clean and brighten unfinished wood, since it will have darkened over time, due to exposure to UV rays and elements.

That is probably true to a certain extent, but where there is usually some moisture content in the exterior wood, the oil may not be able penetrate as much as it anticipated. Resene Danska Teak Oil is a highly ‘refined’ Linseed Oil product designed to bring out the grain of heart timbers such as Rimu and Teak and produces the most natural results when left uncoated. After extolling the virtues of shellac, an ancient finish that has fallen almost entirely out of use, it seems only fair to introduce an entirely new and technological approach. Of paints, steer away from ranch or fence paint as these are quite often made solely for rough sawn timber and will not adequately protect smooth planed timber. You will want to re coat every few years as the wood starts to look dull and dry.

Organisms that discolor or degrade wood need water to survive, and a water-repellent treatment makes it harder for them to grow, as long as it is reapplied to bare wood every year or two. When choosing varnish, look for tung oil and a base of phenolic resin (flexible) or polyurethane resin (hard and durable). Use Cabot Problem-Solver Wood Stripper #8004 to help remove oil-based finishes from wood surfaces. I find this product to be a real enhancement of wood products, bringing out the natural grain.
