For example, if you are staining during a thunderstorm in August, you could wait up to four days before it is safe to topcoat that stain—four days, plus a day for each coat of finish, and then a day to allow the last finish coat to cure. Despite the pine beetle staining, the wood is structurally sound and attractive. In general, stains are applied with a rag or brush and allowed to penetrate into the wood. You don’t want the bare wood exposed for too long before staining and finishing. That means you have to remove a good amount of wood before the stain is completely gone. Jenna was a little worried about the stairs being to hard and possibly slippery for her family.

This is problematic with oil-based stains containing dye as well as pigment, since dye is more easily absorbed than pigment. BTW another post asked about gel stain; I have used the gel stain over a cheap painted piece of furniture to achieve a grained effect, and i was quite surprised and how well it came out. End-grains (areas where the wood has been cut against the grain), such as the front side of a table, tend to soak up more stain than other surfaces. Use a scrap piece of wood or inconspicuous area to test your stain and verify that it’s the color you want.

After you apply the finish to a vertical surface you have a window of opportunity of perhaps 5 minutes when you can correct these errors with your brush instead of waiting for the finish to dry and then sand out the defects. I don’t know if I told you this, but I did use wood filler on all the holes and dings. There could always be adhesion issues between the stain and the existing finish.

It does not destroy the wood fiber so the strength of lumber is generally not affected. I really like antiquing furniture like this because the stain acts as a sealer and leaves a very nice satin finish, almost like furniture wax. I was going for Little Greene acrylic primer undercoat but this primer is recommended for bare wood. Waited 15 minutes, rubbed the finish with a white 3M pad, and applied the oil stain. Natural tung oil is slow curing, and does not cure very hard, so it is best used when a thin matt varnish film is desired and the surface is not subject to heavy wear – it’s great for pine walls and ceilings. The durable finish is U.V. and weather resistant, making it an ideal choice for exterior wood doors, window sills and trim.
