This maintenance is not difficult and will ensure that the caliper remains in excellent working order. Finding a good quality caliper is important if you want to ensure that you are able to take excellent measurements that are accurate and reliable. The electronics in the digital caliper can do the same by doing some of the math during the measurement process. Many prefer dial calipers due to the fact that they work well, are not super hard to use and there are no batteries or charging activities to worry about. Check the caliper often for wear, as well as for burrs and scratches on the jaws and contacting surfaces.
If it is not, you need to open the caliper and wipe each of the jaws to ensure that nothing is between the jaws preventing them from closing completely. Similarly to the digital calipers, dial calipers can also take the outside, inside, step and depth measurements. Clean the measuring surface of the dial caliper with dry and clean cloth after finishing the measurement. Around the same time, a dial indicator was added to allow for fast, comparative readings and higher resolution.
Even a digital caliper, which takes most of the guesswork out of reading the measured value, requires skill on the part of the user to apply the tool properly to the dimension being measured. They’re the ones we use in our shop and with more than 40 years of use, they’re still working perfectly. Use the numbers to the left of the pointer on the slide of the calipers for the first part of the measurement, which indicates inches and hundredths of an inch.
This is done by lifting the vehicle’s front end a few inches off the ground and prying upward on the tire and measuring the amount of deflection, or motion up and down that the ball joint allows. These can be used to find the sizes of drills if the markings have been defaced but it also contains other information such as the diameter in decimal inches for each of the numbered drill bit locations.
Annotating the pictures would be helpful so I know what they description is referring to. I’m not suggesting you do that since you put a lot of work into it. But I still am no closer to learning how to use these calipers than I was before. Most dial calipers will be able to measure within a range of 0 to 6”. There are also 8”, 12” and longer calipers available as well if you need them. This was the first very accurate tool available to the everyday Joe the machinist.
It’s much easier to read digital calipers, and they’re often not any more expensive or less precise than dial calipers. The vernier scale works like the caliper above but the marks allow it to read more accurately. And the one thing I like about the (old fashioned) vernier is that they are far more durable than the dial calipers. The other version is the 0.01 millimeter division; one revolution of the dial indicator needle equals 1 mm. The main scale of a British Imperial dial caliper is divided into one-thousandth (0.001) inch graduations.
Lastly we looked at tool forums, blogs and magazines and checked Amazon reviews and comments from customers that have purchased and used calipers. For example, when measuring the thickness of a plate a vernier caliper must be held at right angles to the piece. Point I am trying to make is that it should not matter which tool you use beyond what you are comfortable with and have available. I checked this against a much more expensive reliable caliper and against setup blocks of known sizes and this was dead on. That’s all one would want. Depth measurements are made with the blade that extends out the back of the caliper.
Starrett’s model 1202F-6 caliper sells for $70 ( ). The dial also reads either fractionally or decimally, but the fractional scale is larger and very easy to read because it is printed on a bright yellow background. Step1: Put the head of the dial caliper on the plane and make sure that the step measuring face is perpendicular to the plane. The Neiko Digital Calipers boast the same accuracy ratings and LCD resolution as the competition but is available at a fraction of the price, making it more accessible for the everyday user.
The first mark is slightly to the left of the line under it and the last mark slightly to the right of the line under it. This and the fact that the 5mm mark appears to perfectly in line with the mark under it tell you that the caliper is reading exactly 5mm. The case as well has been entirely developed by us. In addition the dial bore gauge will be much easier to center in the ring setting gage and you won’t need a third hand. I bought a digital caliper and the thing never reads anywhere near a useful measurement, it’s all in 1/128 and 1/64’s I don’t need to be anywhere near that accurate. The calipers are custom made for us with our aesthetic design though the mechanical components are sourced from a trusted partner.
If the jaws ever need to be reground, straightened or lapped, then the movable vernier will have to be adjusted so that zero coincides. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. When using a caliper for any measurement, always repeat the process to ensure the measurement is repeatable and reliable. The dial caliper has a fixed (main) scale and a movable dial, unlike the vernier caliper which has a second, movable vernier scale. The dial can be rotated beneath the pointer to measure size differential between two objects.
I ordered these because the other plastic caliper that I had was old and dirty (I wanted something better for the photos). Dial calipers are used to take precise measurements accurate up to 1 thousand of an inch! After watching a video on making an accurate table saw sled I started to notice more instructional videos using dial calipers. One or two models have attempted to combine both systems on one dial but that’s confusing and bound to lead to errors. The older plastic caliper is still very accurate and will zero like a normal caliper.
A caliper should be calibrated at least once a year—more often when use is heavy or there are multiple users of the same instrument. The entirety of the caliper uses stainless steel construction, all of which are corrosion resistant. They range from about $25 all the way up to a few hundred dollars!Although I will say you dont need to buy the most expensive one to get a tool that measures acccuratly. As an example, a dial caliper is set up on the spindle of a drill press below (don’t laugh at my drill press… it’s paid for). The process for calibrating a dial bore gauge using a ring setting gage is similar to that of calibrating the gauge using a micrometer.
The head movement is controlled with a thumb tab only – no wheel – so the travel was not as easy to control as that on the other two calipers that have thumbwheels. As with any measuring tool, it is important to make sure a caliper is in proper operating condition and ready to do its work. Determine which side of the jaw to use (inside or outside) based on what is being measured.
On the shop floor, in the inspection room or even for the home hobbyist, the caliper is a fast and easy-to-use tool for basic length measurements. Use the step gauge to measure the distance between one edge and the next edge above it. In the animation above, the step gauge is being used to measure the distance from the corner of a milled part to the front edge of the square feature above it. The extra hard stainless steel jaws provide users with a caliper that will last a long time.
A clamping screw controls scale movement and a dial calibration lock holds the sliding jaw’s position. If you have any reason to take them apart (which is not recommended) be careful because the parts can come loose and fall and you may lose something necessary to the proper workings of the caliper. Then, when you move the indicator to the other side of the blade, you rotate the blade and use the same exact tooth.
