After figuring out the properties of the ultimate work bench, it was time to design it, which is where the fun begins—in the virtual wood shop. Just wanted to say thanks for the tutorial, it was really helpful for my first foray into concrete work. They’re simple enough, but have the fun, interesting detail of the pipe legs and the little cubby under the desktop. A custom cabinet/counter top shop had several tops that were rejects buy the customer. You only have to inset a removable potting tub or two into the workbench top to make a garden sink. You will need room to fabricate and work on individual parts, so you do not want your entire bench to be used by the component you are building. It is a lot of work doing a whole living room, but the results are worth it. Both in looks and to the health of human and animal in the house.
Good god, no. There are 150 people who work at my company and those of us with gray hairs definitely outnumber the kids(which is probably a good lesson in not making judgments based on one photo that you don’t have any context for) however, I will say when there’s free food available the young ones always seem to get there first. If you decide to use a card table as a bench then do not be surprised when things keep falling off of it due to it shaking when you start sanding or sawing. If you anticipate that your table top will take considerable abuse and require regular replacement, I would suggest a two layer top.
I have also built a multi-function outfeed / assembly table / workbench and in doing so have started to think about the cusomizations I would like in my long-term woodworkers bench. The work light is an 18-in.-long under-cabinet fluorescent fixture that plugs into the wall. Reading your building tutorial, how many triangular supports are recommeded for a 8′ bench. Another way to help vibrate the piece is to hit the bottom side of the table (underneath your piece) with a rubber mallet or hammer.
If you’re building a table for bar clamps, cut the legs no taller than about 12 inches. In fact, I used a miter saw and, if you prefer, you could use a simple chop-saw as well. Dirty work is gritty, drips solder, requires oil or produces metal shavings — basically things that can soak into the work bench or leave grit behind that can damage the model. A shelving unit functions as a stretcher, preventing any lateral swaying and stabilizing the legs of the table. I made the mistake of drilling my top counterbore holes – the ones that the lag bolts use to hold the table top to the bench frame – before I had put the top together. If the plywood top is damaged later, it’s a simple task to remove and replace it.
A work bench has to be built strong enough to withstand the everyday work load of pounding, drilling, clamping, gluing and sawing on. I think the experience that building a workbench comes from getting the opportunity to work on large joints which makes it a bit easier to see, and understand the dynamics involved in those joints be it M&T, Dovetails, or other. Wish you’d done this a couple weeks ago cause I build a work bench and would have liked to use this model instead.
I can only look on with terror and envy at your work bench, as I have not started mine. I used about 10oz of mineral oil on this table initially, and I’ll repeat the application weekly for the next month or so. I just pour it on, use an old t-shirt to spread it around, and leave it alone for a few hours or overnight. The plywood shelf needs to have notches cut from each corner to account for the table legs.
However, if you fetch the last row from the cursor, the entire table is filled in. It seems to be a relatively simple to build design, and would be far less expensive then a Roubo or similar. Cutting a mortise (square hole) through the top at the leg locations and allowing the legs to mount into the top yields a bench that is heavy enough and sturdy enough for any woodworking task. The best decision I have made was to build my bench around a workstation to save on space and make my work area more efficient overall. I’m about to start renovating my kitchen, but don’t have a space this big to work with.
Perfect for our workroom off the garage: Build an Organized Pegboard Tool Cabinet and Simple Workbench Love the little cubbies under the hanging cabinet for hardware. I have been designing and building homes for a while, and, somehow, I completed all of them without the aid of the Ultimate Work Bench (UWB), but I always knew there had to be a better way. I like to take a few shop rags or foam to put under the concrete so when it is flipped vertically there is something for it to rest softly on. Continue flipping the piece and rest it on a few spare boards. Teisl says the potting bench’s 37-inch-high work surface is perfect for potting plants.
You will now have a structure which concrete can be poured in. Note — the actual top of your concrete table will be very smooth because it will cure against the smooth and flat melamine surfaces. I then use drywall wareboards with the edges taped off to build on. Wedging table has canvas top and is outside. You can see in the picture below that the table legs come all the way up even with the top of the adjacent 2×4 supports. Once you’ve finished leveling out the concrete lift your work table slightly up and down to vibrate the concrete.
Seasonal movement is more likely to require you to flatten, and as mentioned an easy to work species helps with this task. I can use the table saw, planer, and router in place, and I’ll be mounting a drill press on top too. Which is no big deal at my house, but with work tables they need to both look good and be durable. Assembling the table in the room allows you to build as big a table as you like, without concern for the doorway size. I intentionally made the table deeper than the drill press, to hold my keyboard and trackpad for my shop computer. Fact is I have ruminated over a similar bench/saw table system for myself especially since the advent of these wonderful small but precise portable table saws eliminates the need for a heavy hard to work around and transport cabinet saws. I have a couple friends who might be interested in a concrete console table and I’d like to save the melamine if possible.
