Minwax Stainable Wood Filler is ideal for repairing cracks, small gouges, nail holes, knot holes and other defects in all types of unfinished indoor and outdoor wood surfaces. The photos (right) show a badly damaged piece of wood (two pieces, actually, but both from the same timber and both damaged) that were deteriorated by both termites and fungal rot. It is important to state that IF you choose to use a nail putty listed below applied directly to factory primed MDF, you may or may not run into problems. This is particularly true if the damaged wood is in a location that weakens the entire structure such as supporting posts for a porch or deck, flooring, beams or joists.

Latex filler is made of clay, calcium carbonate, wood fiber, universal colorant, water and some kind of binder. I decided to stay away from anything that is called putty, and use wood filler or some other product instead. If you are not sanding and refinishing the wood at this time you will have to keep the wood clean from filler, by wiping the wood with a wet then dry rag.
