Ready Patch Lite Lightweight Spackling & Patching Compound is specially developed for interior or light duty exterior use. You can completely hide holes and other damage using filling products, which is great news if a beloved piece of furniture, expensive wooden floor or exterior wood needs some TLC to bring it back to vibrant life. And there is no shortage of materials available to us to fill these unsightly holes: wood putty, wood dough, wood filler and, of course, real wood. When the surface has been levelled and the filler has dried completely, feather it in with the surrounding area and paint it. On wood furniture try the Tinted Wood Fillers, which are sandable, stainable and come in six colours. This filler is only used on floors that are already finished, and prefinished hardwood floors.
Do this until the voids are pretty much filled in. You don’t have to fill every square millimeter of the hole, but you do want it well filled so that your new material is tightly wedged into the hole. You can even use two or three colors on the same piece of wood to match areas of light and dark wood grain exactly. If you make it a practice to save a small jar of sawdust from different types of lumber, you will possess an instant patch kit for holes in all kinds of lumber. If bare wood is visible at the bottom of the scratch, you need to re-stain the wood.
If you’re going for a natural oil finish, you might find those areas retain a little more gloss than the surrounding wood. If you’re handy and have a router with the proper templates, cut a piece of wood with the face grain exposed, called a dutchman in woodworking parlance. Epoxy wood filler can be sanded and sculpted although sanding is somewhat difficult.
Once the epoxy hardens, it can be sanded, carved, planed or nailed into just like the original wood. You can fill it but I doubt that on an exposed horizontal surface the patch will last too long. Scott, I’m buying a table that has a damaged leaf, and I want to repair that damage as easily and invisibly as possible. You can see that the termite tunnels are darkened by the penetrated CPES, but that the good wood remains unaffected. Over the years life will leave its mark behind on doors, baseboards, and furniture (such as table and chair legs) in the form of dings and gouges.
You can also read the results of my 1-year field testing of most of these wood fillers and epoxies at The Wood Filler & Epoxy Test (Year 1) to see how these products performed in the real world. Treating the insides of the columns is extremely important, because the wood inside is very vulnerable and CPES will significantly reduce the chance of any future wood deterioration. Use Color Putty® waterborne putty to fill imperfections in woodwork, paneling, furniture and cabinets to achieve a truly perfect blend and finishing look you can be proud of for years. Stainable Wood Filler is designed to fill nail holes, cracks, small gouges and other defects in unfinished wood.
