I’ve started sanding down the surface and I’ve noticed some cracks in the wood from weathering, relatively minor (you can see them in the picture). Once the old finish is off, sand out any stains, gouges from scraping errors, and so forth, and remove random patches of varnish still clinging to the wood. In other words, the only coat of varnish with near perfect durability is the one stored in a vacuum, in darkness, at a low and unvarying temperature. However, often floors are sanded and refinished because th is is the easiest route to a perfect new finish or because the homeowners want to lighten the whole surface.

For cedar, this looks pretty nice, because the wood has a lot of color of its own, and the clear finish really brings it out. If you manage to remove the splatter just give the varnish a light sand and go over it with some more. Depending on how good a job you were able to do with the stripper, you may not have a lot of sanding to do. Start with 120 grit paper to clean off any finish which may remain and to smooth out any bad places in the wood.

For large areas like floors and/or intricate items like banister spindles then oil stain is probably the easiest to use (greater open time is the advantage for the former and greater penetration for the latter). Then use an oil based stain if you want to go for long term wood protection – this will get right into the pores in the wood. What’s under the surface may be a quality piece of furniture that will make a fine addition to your own home or which can be a welcome source of extra cash.

Any of them, if done properly and with sufficient attention to detail, will provide an excellent base for the varnish to come, and a varnish job to be admired when completed. With laminate, techically you cant stain” it, but products like Miniwax Polyshades allow you to darken the wood exactly like a stain. I want to paint it a beautiful aged dark walnut colour and replace the wooden knobs with bronze or black antique drawer pulls.

The reason for priming the wood, whether for painting or varnishing is to create a good bond between the wood and the paint/varnish. It is always best to pour the varnish into a supply can rather than varnish directly from an open can. Be sure to sweep and vacuum the tables and floors of your work space as well; you may have to use a damp cloth or mop. If you stain and then varnish the floor, for the most part only the varnish will wear away leaving any chips less visible. Leaving spots will yield an uneven surface when you finally start finishing it. Apply enough stripper to keep the surface wet, and never work in direct sunlight as you can dry the wood. Apply varnish to the prepared wood with long, smooth, even strokes, laying the varnish along the grain in strips the width of the brush.

Sadly, I think you are going to have to refinish the whole table top to get a good match. The clear finish is applied like an oil-based finish and has the look of high-quality varnish. Identify any areas where the varnish has broken down so that the timber underneath is exposed. They’re more like applying a color filter to a photo, or looking at the wood through tinted glasses. If your wooden windows have gone a few years without any attention then theres a good chance they will end up looking something like the window in this photo.

All wood varies in density therefore some wood will absorb more stain than others so its important you try your sample on the same type of wood you will be staining.
