With these colour schemes the current floor colour seems out of place and I was wondering if you could suggest a stain colour so that the rooms feel warmer and also mix with the black/white colour-schemes for the furnishings. If you try this, however, avoid mixing different brands, because the ingredients in oil-based stains are not always compatible between brands. And the safety of the dye will depend on the particular color, because different colors are, obviously, made from different chemicals. As you can see providing samples is a very important step in choosing a stain color, otherwise you find yourself where you are right now. The neutral colors of your place allow for pretty much any color to look good though. I simply want to protect the table the best way possible, and to do so without turning the wood a golden hue. Saturate wood with a uniform coat of Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner using a clean brush or sponge.

By the time I got all the way around the center petals (about 5 minutes), I figured it was time I could go back around and wipe off a little more stain on each petal, allowing the stain to gradually get darker toward the center. You can also mix with GF liquid oil base stains to obtain a slightly thinner stain than the normal gel formula. For example red and white oak with the same stain color will be a very different look.

I would recommend using an actual stain like Minwax Wood Finish (bright yellow can) and go with something darker and less orange/red like walnut. In all honesty we would always recommend sanding back to the bare wood in order to change the colour of Furniture like this. I wouldn’t advice using cleaning products unless they are natural or PH neutral and even then I would try a teat area, as these could also mark the bare wood. Either way, finishing the railing is critical, because unprotected wood left to the elements gets ugly fast. Stainable Wood fillers are available but many ‘off the shelf’ fillers will not accept a stain.
