Good lawn health helps to fight lawn diseases, reduces the infestation of pests, and helps reduce weed seeds from taking a foothold. Opening a big hole in the ceiling is going to be very messy so it’s normally left until later, after the new loft floor, insulation and stud walls have been completed. There are some firms which specialise in providing a fully (raised) boarded loft, along with a loft ladder and suitable loft lighting, providing a very convenient storage space. Use the heavier, denser sound insulation quilt and not the lighter thermal insulation material, which is of no help here. The talent is there, the plans are top notch, it is a doable thing, and I am assuming funding was available.
If they are of the rafter variety, they will require a great deal more strengthening in order to support the weight of the conversion, and this will increase the cost and complexity of the project. The only difference between a hanging bed and loft are the four corner post, so if they are using them in the hanging bed I would think they would work with a loft. If you have an open-plan arrangement where the stairs rise from a room, it is likely you’ll have to alter it, fitting a new partition wall or choice of escape routes. A loft conversion is one of the quickest and easiest ways of creating a substantial amount of living space in your home, without stealing space from your garden.
I think I’ll do the transition with the toddler bed lower then get the hubby to do this once I know the transition takes. Note that alternate tread stairs and spiral staircases will not be accepted unless there is absolutely no space to accommodate a normal staircase. So if you’re going to be working up there, think about adding or upgrading your insulation while you’re at it.
