Indoor Fireplaces

Once their projects are completed, the members log in to their accounts and complete a short cost survey. Depending on your existing hearth, your frame may or may not fit perfectly against the hearth. Sometimes this is handled by creating a raised hearth where both the hearth and the firebox are higher than the finished floor in the room. An extension to a hearth must be the same height as the original hearth or the new tile could crack. Hearth extensions shall extend at least 16 inches (406 mm) in front of and at least 8 inches (203 mm) beyond each side of the fireplace opening.

Older houses will normally just be exposed brick inside – it is not a legal requirement to line these older chimneys unless they are leaking, but there are often advantages to lining such as increased draw, piece of mind of having a sealed system top to bottom, reduced risk of chimney fire or leakage etc. The first thing that you need to check is the manual for the stove or fireplace you are planning to install, and look for the specification on the SIZE of the protected floor area as well as the suggested minimum R-Value (insulation properties).

The firebox, where most of the intense heat would be, needed much extra mud lining for obvious reasons (probably at least 6 inches or more, that is, if the firebox was not made of stone). According to the American Gas Association, most of these fireplaces can only be used for a maximum of four hours at a time and cannot be used in small spaces. On a daily basis, our owned retail stores help consumers design unique hearth solutions for their homes with the #1 and #2 brands in the hearth industry. Local codes may also require an inspection of your fireplace to make sure the damper and chimney are in good working condition.

Gas fireplaces need an annual service check ($100 to $150) plus a chimney inspection. This optional system provides heat to more than one room and moves unwanted heat out of the fireplace. The fact is, they were probably just a tad less trouble to build than to maintain safely. Masonry fireplace hearths and hearth extensions shall be constructed of concrete or masonry, supported by noncombustible materials, and reinforced to carry their own weight and all imposed loads.

I watched the video on the display and smiled big time – a stone fireplace could be mine and no stone mason or special skills needed – plus I could afford it on my limited decorating budget! Notice also how the style of the fireplace ties in so beautifully with the oriental rug. I bought a white wood board that was the depth of the fireplace and cut it to the length of the fireplace to be the top of the mantle.

The regs for a constructional hearth are particularly belt and braces” unless the stove is an inset stove (does a stove with legs really reguire 5″ of concrete underneath of it?). Where a steel insert fireplace is installed, inspect the upper portions of the fireplace at the chimney throat with great care. This isn’t my personal fireplace but I have been telling people how I did mine. The edge of the hearth should be at a different level from the floor to clearly define the safe perimeter – you can easily do this by making the hearth higher than the rest of the floor. This picture of the fireplace at the Fenno house at the Sturbridge Village Museum shows an older fashion oven in a back wall, and an oven door sitting on the floor of the hearth.

Let me just state for the record that I am totally okay with people disagreeing with our choice to remove the stone from our fireplace though you should know that it had been badly sealed and was shiny and discolored. We added a box frame so the fireplace wouldn’t be sitting on the floor and for some added interest. Removing the bookshelf and tiling over the fireplace gave the room a more open and modern look. The base is the single most important thing you want to build reinforced and built sturdy to hold all of the weight from the cinderblocks.
