It’s true: The spindles on your old stair rail weren’t installed with the notion that they would someday need to be replaced, but don’t be intimidated—they can be, even if the spindles are trapped in holes at the top and bottom. This means you’re going to make your stair treads deeper, but unfortunately, keeping riser height to within acceptable bounds and making the stair run match the required length, the result may be an awkward halting-walk stairway. Spiral staircases wind around a central pole and have a handrail on the outer side only. However, changing the direction of the stairs allows stairs to fit where they would not otherwise, or provides privacy to the upper level as visitors downstairs cannot simply look up the stairs to the upper level due to the change in direction. Treads are the flat part we step on. Risers are the vertical pieces that keep us from sticking our toes through the back. Pain and pleasure are the two key ways to change behavior and increase motivation.

Mostly it gets used for exterior stairs with features cut into the treads to improve traction during wet or freezing weather. The most difficult staircase to deal with is one with a steep rise and narrow treads. While this kind of staircase can work wonderfully well, it’s not necessarily a space-saving solution.

The most simple in terms of design, manufacture and installation is the staircase with straight flight. I knew it might be a while until we could replace the treads and I certainly didn’t want any little toes getting cut open. At first we thought we’d tackle this project on our own; rip out the carpeting and restain the treads – but then we realized the treads were not made out of wood that could be stained ….. and our staircase is a custom layout, so it was beyond our DIY skills! From here you can select what stairs to use, how wide they are and if they will have a railing or not. Many homeowners opt to use a spiral kit staircase that relies on steel instead of wood.

So this monster of a project all started while my husband was away at work… (BAD WIFE!) The stair carpet was crappy to say the least, and I really wanted my staircase to be amazing.
