J&W Lumber specializes in Rough Douglas Fir from small 2×2’s to 12×12 timbers and larger, available in lengths exceeding 30 feet. Douglas firs are seral trees in temperate rainforest , and possess thicker bark and a somewhat faster growth rate than most other climax trees of the area, such as the western hemlock and western redcedar. In spite of this, walnut is still a great wood to work with and lends itself nicely for use as accents and inlays to dress up a project. We harvest, cut, dry, machine and select this wood to make the best floor we can; One floor at a time. The shade-intolerance of Douglas fir plays a large role in the forest succession of lowland old growth rainforest communities of the Pacific Northwest. Because WFP’s Douglas Fir seasons well, dries evenly and remains straight and true with minimum checking or distortion, its workability is superb. Vast quantities of Douglas fir provide dimension lumber for the construction industry and veneers for plywood. Douglas Fir provides a tough surface that will hold a finish, maintain its appearance under extreme wear and remain level without cracking, scuffing or splintering.
Because of its structural performance benefits, which rival many fabricated products, dry Douglas Fir is also often selected for horizontal framing in multistory wood-frame buildings. Additionally, Douglas Fir has an excellent performance record when used in exposed applications for exterior trim without ground contact. The wood is very stiff and strong for its weight, and is also among the hardest and heaviest softwoods commercially available in North America.
Douglas Fir is known for being very dimensionally stable-that means that when it expands and contracts due to moisture in the environment (as all woods do), it holds its shape better than most species, another important characteristic if you’re building something like a boat or an aircraft, when holding a certain shape is crucial. Designers appreciate the rich visual quality of Douglas fir texture and grain as well as its response to fine craftsmanship and finishing.
The Department of Building and Housing Guidebook for Builders outlines where Douglas fir can be used, and to what treatment level, for different building members (see below under technical documents). Douglas fir log buildings that are well designed, constructed and maintained have remained in good condition for 25-30 years. Around 60% of NZ grown Douglas fir is strong enough for engineering uses, selected using machine stress grading.
When dramatic design solutions are called for on hillsides or in hurricane country, pressure-treated Douglas Fir pole construction is often the best and most economical solution. Douglas Fir is a light, soft wood with long fibres that mean it has very high levels of resistance to both traction and bending. The way Douglas fir grows naturally means that this Northwest native also has some characteristics that make it fit for a variety of uses.
It has been accepted for use under all model codes and is interchangeable with solid-sawn Dimension lumber of the same size, grade and species. Not only is this hard on the environment, it drives the price of the wood so high that making furniture out of it is out of the question for most woodworkers. Douglas Fir is known for its distinctive grain patterns, produced by the varying degrees of spring and summer wood in the grain.
There are currently no H3.1 treatments approved for Douglas fir so it therefore cannot be substituted for H3.1 treated radiata pine where specified accept through an Alternative Solution, where it may be acceptable for use in weatherboards, fascia and jambs. In the winter, New World porcupines primarily eat the inner bark of young conifers, among which they prefer Douglas fir. The high number of knots in the wood can considerably weaken its mechanical resistance levels.
Given its resilience under tremendous loads and vibration, and the ability to take and hold heavy railroad spikes tightly, it’s clear why Douglas Fir still dominates the railway tracks. It’s also fairly soft (1 in hardness on a scale of 1 to 5), which makes it easy to work with. Douglas Fir is a top choice when the material must resist slivering and indentation, be strong, durable, functional and yet, at home in its natural surroundings.
Western hemlock typically dominate oldgrowth rainforests, but contain sections of Douglas firs, redcedar, alder , and even redwood forests on their southern extent, near the Oregon and California border, while Sitka spruce increases in frequency with latitude. Designers, architects and consumers choose WFP’s Douglas Fir products when they want the best in structural lumber and for clear, tight, straight grain.
Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is not a true fir at all, it is a distinct species named after Archibald Menzies, a Scottish physician and naturalist who first discovered the tree on Vancouver Island in 1791, and David Douglas, the Scottish botanist who later identified the tree in the Pacific Northwest in 1826. Douglas Fir bridges – either in the solid sawn designs of past years or in today’s glued, stress-laminated forms – span roads and rivers, lead hikers into the wilderness or over gorges and offer access for everything from golf carts to semi-trailers and heavy machinery. In strength properties, Douglas Fir/Western Larch has the highest ratings of any Western softwood for extreme fiber stress in bending (Fb); for tension parallel-to-grain (Ft); for horizontal sheer (Fv); for compression perpendicular-to-grain (Fc); and for compression parallel-to-grain (Fc//). Douglas Fir flooring is available in 1×4 (nominal) sizes in standard lengths 4 feet and longer.
Douglas does grow long and straight so getting above 6m isn’t so much of a problem depending on your widths. Douglas Fir is hard enough that it can be difficult to work with hand tools, but it responds well to sharp power tools. If a different tone is required, Douglas fir is also known for holding all types of stains, finishes, and paints very well. Ideal for frameworks, included glued laminated timber (Douglas Fir, once dried, becomes very hard), as well as for cladding, exterior joinery and layout. However, Douglas fir exhibits considerable morphological plasticity, and on drier sites coast Douglas fir will generate deeper taproots.
Very narrow-ringed wood of old trees may be yellowish brown and is known on the market as yellow-fir. Douglas-fir has been use untreated in house framing in New Zealand since the 1940’s and is traditionally used untreated in house framing in North America and elsewhere throughout the world. Even though fir will shrink and expand as it absorbs moisture, it always returns to the same shape.
This is a prized quality for builders, and fir is so reliable that it is even shipped, cut and installed on homes while it is still green. Additionally, Douglas fir has an excellent performance record when used in exposed applications for exterior trim without ground contact. For this reason Douglas Fir and Western Larch are usually separated in the appearance grades and marketed as distinct species to allow a larger range of visual choices for discriminating end users. We produce this floor from antique Douglas Fir beams reclaimed from large industrial projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. We highly recommend ordering an actual product sample of the species and stain color to eliminate any confusion. In 1827, English botanical explorer David Douglas recognized the fir’s resource potential. There are approximately 34.6 million acres of Douglas fir managed primarily in natural stands, on long rotations.
