Easy fix, I just took some fine grain sandpaper to it to dull and further roughen the finish. Paint your piece of furniture with your #1 paint colour – you don’t need to do anything special to the paint at this point. It’s not nearly as challenging as some people make it out to be. I would say that almost anyone can paint and distress furniture! Loved what the Vaseline did, but what is recommended for keeping it all in tact.
It took longer for the paint between coats to dry than the actual distressing steps themselves. If you are painting a previously painted surface, then it’s better to give the paint a good chance to cure. The secret here is to use a light hand – you can easily apply a second coat to darken it. I ended up using a damp cloth for the wiping to help me achieve the look I wanted. Ensuring the floor lives up to its look means taking no shortcuts when it comes to proper installation.
Before we get started, you will need to know how to make my DIY Wood Stain So go ahead and make that, because it needs to sit for at least 24 hours before you can use it! After letting the paint dry overnight, I went at it with 80 grit sandpaper on my Cordless Orbital Sander You’ll see that the wood grain pops through FAST! I was amazed at how hard my first layer of wax had become in just 24 hours, and I had to work up a sweat applying heavy force to actually get through the wax layer and two paint layers to reveal the paint and wood underneath.
For projects like the X Coffee Table and the X Console Table , the plans call for several different dimensions of wood and most of those different dimensions (2×2, 2×4, 2×6, 1×12) come in different species. These tiles with a totally awesome rustic, knotty pine look is another design idea from Vives – a part of the porcelain collection named World Woods Both walls and floors are tiled, for a cool log cabin appeal. The acrylic paint that I used is just the craft paint that comes in small bottles. Like I said, I haven’t tried it but I am guessing that you could make your own stain.
The rest of the table is looking great however, in areas where we placed the wood putty it’s still white. Don’t forget to wipe away the sanding debris before applying additional coats of paint and/or poly. I wait a couple of hours again to make sure it is all dry, then I add the final coat. I’ve been experimenting with 2 jars of solution – I made one with apple cider and one with white vinegar…in case it made a difference.
If you would like some sheen to it then a Wax to finish can be buffed to the required shine, but be aware that sometimes adding a wax to a white finish can create a yellow tinge. Parsons urges anyone who is contemplating trying these techniques to first study genuine antiques and note where the paint has worn away or become distressed from handling and where the finish has become dark and antiqued from the accumulation of dirt over the years. I found the Vaseline makes it easy for the top coat to rub off and especially because it never dries. So we were thrilled with the colors and the variations that we landed on, thanks to staining some and allowing the stain to penetrate a while, wiping it down right away on other boards, and using the water technique above to get some lighter variations. The tea bath increases the quantity of tannins in the wood which is why it increases the intensity of the darkening.
I don’t typically share project tutorials here, but this was the most fun I’ve ever had working on furniture and thought you might enjoy trying it too. That takes a bright red and makes it an old weathered barn red… Can use black or browns for the stain. Paint your layers as thick or thin as you want- nothing really has to be uniform.

I used the white version in my most recent photos of my Lemon Filled Lavender Cupcakes.
Once you learn the basics, you can create your own style and increase your value as a wood flooring craftsman. What I learned after: I used a handheld sanding block because I’m lazy and it was available, but I really didn’t need it. A coarse piece of sandpaper and some arm strength will work just fine. We did several batches of these (with different color combos), and made some barn board ‘signs’ to give away to our loved ones.
Fine grit is important because more coarse sandpaper will leave scratches and it won’t look natural. Once the paint dried, about 24 hours in my case, I broke out my belt sander strapped on some 80-grit sandpaper and went to town. Be sure to wipe the sanded furniture down thoroughly with a tack cloth or damp rag – you want to make sure you get rid of all the debris before painting.
