Wood Lathe Works

When moving from flat style woodworking like cabinet work and jewelry boxes to round work like bowls and pens, it appears that all that is needed will be a wood lathe and a few cutting tools. The main claim to fame of the JET JWL-1221VS , on the other hand, includes its smooth transition from forward to reverse, optimally designed speed ranges, 60 RPM to 3,600 RPM variable speed, and unrivaled speed control ( PSI Woodworking TCLC10VS has more upper RPM speeds, but JET JWL-1221VS Variable Speed Wood Lathe has more variation in the lower RPM settings).

Hdpe melting is very easy and doesn’t produce fumes simply melt items that have a recycling symbol with the number 2 this means its hdpe put it in the oven at 350 for about an hour and then put the plastic in a square mold with a piece of square wood that fits in the mold clamped down when its cool you will have a nice square piece that you can use if you sand it it will be even smoother most plastics around your house are hdpe.

I think if you turn down a 4×4 pole 20 feet long the time the flag straightened out I think the pole would bend to the point of breaking off.(might not?)There is not much wood left, however guys that build sailboat masts if you really need to use wood would be the people to of them laminate and make a box shape(birdsmouth) before taking it down by of these are worth 10`s of thousands.

I recommend this lathe for the average Joe (or Jane) and have taught many people how to turn wood on it. Other than the poor quality adjusting lock handles (I recommend throwing them away right out of the box and putting hex bolts in), I was more than 100 hours into the lathe before I had ANY of those other problems, and I have to admit I demand a LOT out of my lathes (got both this one and their mini lathe), probly much more than 90% of you out there.

Built on an angle-steel bed with cast-iron headstock, tailstock and toolrest (and with an overhung drive pulley) this was a very small lathe – so tiny that, conveniently, the advertising literature failed completely to mention its dimensions and gave instead the weights of the individual components: the bronze-bushed headstock 2 lbs 4 ozs, tailstock 2 lbs 8 ozs, bed 7 lbs, toolrest 2 lbs and the two 4-step pulleys 1 lb each.

You’ll find that the tail stock of this wood lathe has a scale that reads both millimeters and inches and it’s great in height with a sturdy ACME barrel lead screw that has the ability to travel around 64 mm. With 24 integrated indexing positions, the Jet JWL-1221VS 12-Inch by 21-Inch Variable Speed Wood Lathe is relatively heavier than its predecessor and it also has a bigger swing with powerfully built components such as the tail stock, banjo and head.

I turn some spindles and hollow forms, and the sliding headstock is a necessity for me. My lathe sits in a corner, and turning out board won’t work for me. The Nova DVR is a nice lathe, haven’t heard of problems over here with it, but a bit light weight for me, and the speed changing is a bit slow unless you use the 4 preset speeds, and no others.

I’ve had this lathe for 3 years and put hundreds of hours on it. I have turned everything from salad bowls (offset) to pens on it. At first I missed the hand wheel and the quick access to a sanding (or tool tip touch up) disc some of the other models have mounted on the far side of the headstock, but then realized that once I moved up from the sewing machine types to the big boys, I had to give some of those up.. now I don’t even notice them!

There is no other consumer lathe with the engineering, mass, power, stability, and finishes that make up the SL2542. Larger items that can’t be turned over the lathe bed can be turned on a lathe with an outboard feature. I recently decided to make room for a new tool and I thought it best to be taken up by a lathe. Like most turners, I owned a series of progressively larger machines before getting the Powermatic 3520B Lathe. The height of the lathe spindle is important if you use it for hours at a time.

They feature a stand integrated with a tool that allows big wood pieces to sculpt effortlessly. Incidentally it’s not completely unknown to turn metal freehand, with a toolrest and gravers.. watchmakers lathes are set up for this. If on a bench stand, the lathe should be well to the front, as consistent with stability. On top of that wood swells and contracts and bends depending on it’s environment, so it is just as much an art form as it is science. In addition to a lathe, you’ll need a set of turning tools to shape the wood and lathe chucks to attach the wood to the lathe.

Without a tiny chamfer around the hole on the fp, there is no space for these wood fibers to lift up. The raised fibers around each screw can actually prevent the fp from sitting flush with the surface of the blank in some cases, compromising your mounting. We will send you a short Lathe Purchase Agreement and request a $1000 deposit, which will be placed in an account that will not be accessed by STI until after the delivery of your lathe.

Four spindle speeds were provided of 875, 1350, 2250 and 3450 rpm – although the motor and 4-step V pulley required to produce them were only available at extra cost and, at $18.50, increased the price of the basic lathe by a massive 39%. Some lathe stands can be adjusted for height, but it is normally possible to raise the lathe on blocks or to stand on a platform to achieve this. Continue pushing the tool into the stock gradually, in passes, so that you remove a roughly equal amount of wood with each pass. It is important to remember that different lathes really are intended for different purposes and projects.large wood lathes

The Turning Chisels all have our Patent Adjustable Screw Tool Stocks, by which they may be adjusted in the cut while the lathe is in motion. The ornamental turning lathe was developed around the same time as the industrial screw-cutting lathe in the nineteenth century. You might want your wood lathe machine to have an outboard turning facility to accommodate larger diameter workpieces. Cost: From what I’ve seen metal lathes cost more than wood lathes when you consider similar capacities and features.
