Measure out where the studs are in your wall (insert weird joke about husband being a stud) and measure out how far you want the shelves spaced apart (word to the wise, find your biggest frame and go from there) I actually had a big clock I wanted to stick on the top shelf…but after it was all said and done it was a little too close to the ceiling for my liking.
Seeing as how this room is really small along with the reflections from the mirror, it’s really hard to get good photos of the space, so bear with us. Before we took a trip to the hardware store, we mapped out where and how long we wanted the shelves to be with a few pieces of painter’s tape (seriously, we use this stuff for everything but painting).
Instead of repainting them (it’s not as easy as you might think) install a radiator cover turning the unit into a shelf for books and framed photos. Designed by Evan Clabots and Louis Filosa for the e-commerce site , the Sway shelves don’t require elaborate mounting racks to install. Run one 2″ x 4″ along the ceiling at the distance you want away from the wall and run a 2″ x 4″ down to the floor along each side wall. Using an old door, shelves of different width are attached to the back, allowing the door to rest against the wall. I think you’d be much happier with these features as they really are designed to make it even easier to use.
The mounting system of this shelf (a hidden 2×4 on the wall inside the box) is smart and makes getting the shelf right where you want it a breeze. We would totally use reclaimed lumber if it were easy to come by where we live.
The wall-mounted design also keeps everything off the floor, leaving room for more storage underneath and keeping it easy to clean. You mentioned in the comments that you would like to make one for your bathroom to hold towels. Measure and mark for attaching points on the back of the shelf roughly near the ends, and at similar intervals in between if spanning a wide space (Image 1). Place your tape (with the spots for your hole marked) Â on the wall and use a level to ensure the tape is straight.
Unfortunately the studs on this wall wouldn’t allow us to center the shelves so instead we decided to use wall anchors. By building shelves yourself you can make sure to use every inch of space that you have and even build your shelves around the boxes you know you’re going to be storing on them. Just fasten the Easy Track rail system to the wall, hang the panels from the rail, and attach the hanging rods. For the amount of sturdy shelf space we now have in our garage, $200.00 was well worth it.

It would be perfect inside the back door to keep backpacks organized during the school year or you could find loads of other uses for it. STEP 9: Time to do a happy dance because you survived your first DIY shelf experience. Use the stud finder again to find the locations of the remaining studs and mark for your shelf brackets. But for now we’re happy to bask in the glory of this project: the big intimidating blank wall is no more. To make the cuts, you will need a plastic miter box like the one illustrated here, and a handsaw.
Next draw the horizontal lines by measuring from the ground up. If your bottom shelf will have a 21 inch space under it, measure up 24 ½ inches and use your level to draw a horizontal line all the way across the wall. Even if you have not done any similar DIY project in the past, you will still find it very easy to follow this one – it is simply that comprehensive! Clamp a straightedge guide to the door and make a lengthwise cut using a 40-tooth carbide blade. The top shelf can hold your TV while the lower shelf can store your DVD player or gaming console. One of our customers decided to construct her own industrial pipe shelf to take advantage of her extra corner space. Rip the strips to identical width so that all the finished shelves will be of uniform thickness when the strips are assembled on edge.
You’ll notice that a few of the displaced Wallflowers made it back up on the shelves. But if you follow the general plan I’ve given you in the picture above you can adapt them to build shelves to your heart’s content. The rustic look of a pallet shelf is gorgeous and you can build more than one with a single pallet so this may be the most frugal way to add shelving yet. I used heavy duty anchors (2 to 4, 75 lb rated anchors per shelf) because I have some heavy weights!
